More SAFER awards went out today.
In September we received a request to send a letter of commitment to accept SAFER funding that had to be signed by our governing body.
Did everyone have to do this?

MARGARET, AL (WBRC) -
Margaret is the third largest city in St. Clair County and in less than a month, they won't have any firefighters.
The city was founded in 2011 and is home to about 4,000 people. If the firefighters are gone, many residents and business owners worry that their safety and low insurance rates will be in jeopardy.
Residents tell FOX6 News that the quality of life in the city is great as long as they can retain their five firefighters and paramedics.
The workers will lose their jobs because a federal grant that pays for their department is running out. Mayor Isaac Howard says the city is trying to find alternate resources to keep the firefighters.
Fire Chief Thomas E. Dixon, Jr. writes in a letter to the city that "I do not believe that I can properly articulate in words how dangerous it will be should we reduce staffing." He adds that he feels that the fire department has safed several citizens from situations in which they likely would have passed away.

Wasn't it Lawrence MA that picked up a 2011 that sustained their 2009 that was a feature article here on FH.com too? It's probably been 2 dozen or more that were repeats to keep the same positions on from a prior award, which does get a bit frustrating when folks are doing the right thing and trying to use it to expand in growing areas like the program was intended for. Poor planning and policy have been rampant for too long in many areas. Here it doesn't make sense that there's only 5 people in the whole fire department, and unless there's some kind of anomaly with only 4000 residents not seeing why there's a full paid FD there.
Or how a city that just formed in 2011 has a SAFER award. Or that there's anything resembling NFPA compliance at any level if it is just 5 in the department. Somehow I don't think the residents were made fully aware of the sustaining costs of an FD. Not like the real story will ever come out in a TV clip or newspaper article, but definitely wasn't the best marketing job for anything to have this out there.
Exactly! Another example of poor media reporting Sensationalism reporting does nothing but exacerbate a bad situation in the first place. Kinda makes you wonder what they are teaching these colleges kids with journalism degrees? Do they not know how to research a story first or do they just accept at face value the lies and politically spun 30 second sound bites as actual fact? There is so much content missing from this story it is pathetic.
If you go to one of your first grants that was ever rececied (or the one where your first 1199A is at) and you select "view 1199A" it will have a list of all the grants you have received by grant number. If you are in the running to get a 2012 SAFER grant it should already be listed up there. I did not realize this until a friend helped me find our award about eight weeks before we received the "official" announcement.
We got our reference number for this 2012 SAFER grant a before Christmas. It was on a grant from 5 yrs. ago 1099A Award page. I know it’s not a 100% guarantee but we have all our fingers and toes crossed.
