I walked into Green Bay Fire Station 6 that morning for a ride along and this was the news coverage on the TV. Several years ago, I read the book "3000 Degrees" that was about this fire and the men who died. I truly felt a connection through the stories. A couple years ago I was out at the National Fire Academy and the names of each of these guys were in the bricks leading up to the fallen firefighter's memorial.
There is much to be learned and these memories of these guys should live on. While we mourn the loss of these guys, but I would add that some special recognition be given to the Battalion Chief that day who physically stood in the stairwell preventing other FFs from going in when all other efforts were futile.......That takes stones and is often overlooked.
Mike MacNamee was the district chief that stood in the doorway of the Cold Storage building and said "no more". His decision that day saved the lives of many more of his brother firefighters. it was a hard decision, but irt was the right one.
I know a lot of the people mentioned in the book 3000 degrees, including Mike MacNamee.
Many of the sons of the Worcester 6 are now on the job themselves, carrying on their fathers' legacies.
RIP W6. It's tough to believe that was 13 years ago. A handful of years before I knew I wanted to work in the fire service, but I remember that it still had an impact on me back then.
Thanks for the book reference. I've seen it mentioned on here before, but I'm gonna see about picking it up or suggest it to Mrs. YJ for a xmas gift.
