Greetings -
I'm anticipating moving from the Albany, NY area to somewhere around the Midlothian / Mansfield / DFW, TX area. I've thoroughly enjoyed my years in the fire service and would like to continue my involvement. So - moving somewhere with a quality volunteer fire department is very important to me with the area I decide to live in. I would like to rent my first year and then purchase a home once I learn the area. Unfortunately, I haven't found an easy way to narrow this down and I won't have the luxury to visit in the near future.
My current department runs about 600 - 700 calls a year and is pretty well rounded (rescue truck, 2 brush trucks, boat (we do ice water rescue), 3 engines, 2 ems vehicles, misc vehicles). Training is extremely important to me as I want to ensure I am working with a great, safe group of folks. Can anyone advise me on any departments that would be in the immediate area? I would really like to find a squared away volunteer or volunteer/paid combo department. I will hopefully be relocating for work in the next few months.
Thanks for any assistance. Be safe.
-Colin

Not sure the question
But most volunteer depts are actual county areas
Most city are paid with no volunteer
Mansfield I don't think has volunteer , midlothian not sure
Check to see if they have a web site and call them if it does not indicate

You will find that Texas volunteer depts are not to well funded, which can effect the equipment they have compared to what you might be use to
If you contact the county fire marshal, they normally have connection with the volunteers
In the area you are looking at, there is Tarrant, Johnson, ellis and DallasLast edited by fire49; 12-21-2012 at 08:02 AM.

Thanks folks.
Fire49, my question is basically what towns around those areas have volunteer fire departments? As I said, I would like to rent the first year then purchase a home later. I'm not sure how Texas runs, but basically each town has its own department. We then all work under one county system, each individual department being toned out for calls in their area.
So, is there any specific areas you recommend that have squared away departments in or around the areas I am looking at? I know all of those main cities are paid, but how about outside it and close to it?

I really have no involment with the volunteers
Highly suggest contact Tarrant county fire marshal direct and ask him all the questions you want
Great guy and will tell it to you straight

That's an awesome resource, thank you! And you are correct, I will be relocating there for work and am looking to stay involved as a volunteer as I have grown to love it. However, a career is always great too haha! I got a small taste of it running a 72hr shift with our rescue in NYC for Sandy and it was quite the incredible experience overall.
