*UPDATE* SWAT Personnel have found a DOA on the shoreline with several weapons *appears* to be the suspect. Airport CFR rigs are now moving in to make knock-downs of the four+ dwellings on fire in an attempt to stop the spread of fire- not committing any assets until safety is guaranteed of course.

Interesting use of ARFF equipment to contain fires in a potential "hot" zone. I wonder if this is in a plan somewhere, or was this thinking outside of the box on the go? I hope the guys that were hit are ok.

What is this world coming to?
Rest in peace, Brothers..."The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

My town, I grew up a mile from the scene. One of our guys (City of Rochester) volunteers for Webster and was shot in leg and pelvis. One of those killed is a LT in the Webster PD, the other works for 911.
Here is audio of Webster VFF and our City FF after being shot.

I saw that on Statter911.com too.
What an awesome job he did of keeping calm and telling vital info to responding units. Part of it was to stay conscious from his wounds but he did an outstanding job! I am a dispatcher and I am not sure if I would be that calm on the other end.
My prayers are with the families of the victims and hope for a speedy recovery for the two injured.Jason Knecht

I was hearing it live over the scanner, starting at 6:15am (when it first started popping over social networking pages of my friends from upstate NY), until they found the gunman.... lots of rumors were flying around... the cops did a great job securing the scene, and trying to find the shooter. even the brother who was giving updates to keep everyone safe did a great job.
The dispatchers did an AMAZING JOB staying calm during the entire thing. Speaking as a dispatcher and dispatch instructor, I can honestly say that with several of my firefighters or cops shot, my stress level would have been through the roof, and the supervisor probably would have needed to calm me several times during the incident.
It's a very sad time when unarmed responder are targeted for death when they are trying to do their job, especially when they aren't doing it for any compensation. Rest in peace Firefighter/911 Dispatcher Mike Chiapperini and Firfighter/Police Lieutenant Tomasz Kaczowka, and I hope the two injured firefighters and the off duty police officer who was shot have speedy recoveries from their gunshot wounds. If my basic HazMat training has taught me nothing else, it's that if you see a glowing green monkey running away from something, follow that monkey!

An estimated 5000 brothers and sisters paid their respects on Saturday - the "wait" was about three hours between arrival and paying one's respects.
I'm sure the high school gym where Mike's funeral will be held Sunday will be packed, as will the Church where Tomasz's funeral will be held on Monday.
The two injured brothers also came to the school today to pay their respects.
The services will reportedly be broadcast live on WHEC.com.
