Just study the notes. The seminar only goes through the same notes that you have online for your use. Dont waste your gas and time. The class is only 90 minutes long and the LAFD firefighters that run these classes dont really know a whole lot nor do they know any info related to the testing process or an HR related issues or questions that people might have.

You can't compare apples to oranges. Law enforcement testing is way more intense process than the fire department. When you have over 12K people testing the city doesnt care about your test five years ago plus the city is so under staffed that there is no bearing on what somebody did 5 years nor do they even care.

Is there going to be a list made off this test? Anybody know how big the list is going to be or how long it lasts?

Yes there is going to be a list made and they are going to hire between 300 to 400 within the next two years.

Well, you're the one said that there must be some reason as to why they would ask. I provided an answer based off my knowledge. The testing may be different but the applications are not. They are the same generic applications. But by all means, get in touch with the city and ask.

Wow, a whole bunch of people testing.

I am not 100% sure buuuuut, I think last go around you had to get a certain score to get an interview....and I have been told it was a very high score. 95%ish. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Like I said, just what I have been told. I didn't get to take this test last time around.

And just a word of advice, don't sweat the number of candidates testing.

This is how it works.... You take the written and you must score 70 percent and above to move to the next step. Qualifying Only written test. Then you must take the CPAT and pass it. If you pass the written and then pass the CPAT test then you get an interview. Now after you take the oral interview you need to score 95% and above to move forward at that point.... The next step after that would be background paperwork which you want to walk out with right after the interview. In the past if you score a 95% and above on the oral interview then they hand you paperwork with background investigation forms to start filling out which then you will be on your way to becoming an LAFD firefighter if you are able to pass all the other steps and get thru the drill tower which I think is about 20 weeks of complete hell at first.

Ya that's what I was saying. Seems like they would have to go through a TON of interviews. But hey, I'm not complaining.

i just received an email from the city of LA inviting me to attend practice test sessions every tuesday this month. i guess this is a good sign? i thought i might get official permission to actually take the written exam first. i hope it does not take long for too much longer until we hear word. i'm gonna end up spending a gojillion dollars on my plane ticket to california at this rate.

The written test is scheduled for March 2nd or 3rd hopefully. Anything can happen with The City on changing dates but it looks like its a go. We will probably hear two weeks out. It would suck to pay for airline tickets and then have to cancel them. But buying them now would be cheaper and make sure they are refundable and then you can change the dates if you have too

Just curious as to what everybody has been doing to get ready. Do you have an exercise routine, special diet, a specific study method, a mentor? On an unrelated note, does anybody know when Pasadena plans to open apps?

Well, to be honest I've followed their recommendations posted on their websites for last 5 years. Even though after the first time I applied with them back in 2007 I was hired by another large agency in midwest, I kept taking the CPAT every year and testing for large agencies as well.

Their CPAT preparation booklet -that was posted on the joinlafd website for years- helped me a big deal. I still use it, even though my department's excercise specialist team suggests something a little different.

I would recommend to follow that, look for PREPARE4SUCCESS on FB (Lamorris Wilcher), and keep your eyes on their website.

Good luck, I hope I can make it to the exam.

What was your experience applying back in 2007, if you don't mind me asking?

I think Crossfit, interval training routines and a couple days of free weights per week are great ways to prepare for the demands of the job. The CPAT should be a breeze compared to what the rigors of the academy will be on you. Wood ladders are not light!

Just got my test date andscheduled my CPAT in Livermore. They do not offer them nearly as often as I thought they would. I had to make sure I scheduled one sooner rather than later because I am not sure how soon our interviews will be scheduled after the test.

I would not be surprised if a lot of people did not have theirs in time for the interview because they are not offered regularly.

My status online still indicates "evaluating minimum qualifications". Is anyone else still waiting to receive a test date?

I received my letter on Saturday to test on March 3rd. I live in CA, so I don't know if that has anything to do with the timing, but I wouldn't worry to much about the online status. Seems like everyone has "Evaluating Minimum Qualifications" still. Mine does at least!

Yeah I live on the East Coast so in reality it will take some time to be received; but should expect it in a few days.
