The University of Extrication column for the February and March 2013 magazine is a two-part series on the exterior 'badging' found on new vehicles today. The first article explains that a new system has officially been established that sets guidelines for the names and vehicle identification markings found on the exterior and interior of cars.
Up until this point, there has been no 'standard' for what a car manufacturer puts on the outside of their hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric plug-in vehicle. In fact, beginning with the 2012 model year, GM is selling hybrids that do not have any exterior markings, called 'badging' to advise responders that the vehicle is a hybrid.
The organization called SAE, Society of Automotive Engineers, created a standard that greatly improves the badging that we will see on future models of these vehicles. I was able to serve on this committee as the fire service representative.
The first article of my series explains all about the SAE standard and how it can make a difference for us.
Part 2, the March article, is an all photo article. The images are shots of exterior badging on 2013 vehicles. Each image asks you as the reader to determine if that badging is on a gasoline/diesel vehicle, a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and an electric plug-in vehicle. The answers to the article will be posted here in mid-February for our University of Extrication readers. iPad readers of Firehouse Magazine will have an interactive version of the article available to them.
Here's a sample badging from the 'quiz'. What type of vehicle is it on?
Gasoline/diesel vehicle? Hybrid? Plug-in hybrid? or Electric plug-in vehicle?

The March 2013 issue of Firehouse Magazine will have Part 2 of my series on vehicle badging; specifically for hybrids and electric plug-in vehicles. The article is essentially a collection of images of badging with the challenge being you have to decide if the image is from an internal combustion engine vehicle, a hybrid, an electric plug-in, or maybe you can't tell and need more info.
For those who get the free iPad edition of Firehouse Magazine, you will have access to an interactive badging 'quiz' as well.
As you work through the 'quiz' whether it is in print or on your iPad, here are the 'answers'. Magazine readers get nine images and free iPad version readers get the full, interactive program.
