Guys my main source is a guy in the academy right now graduating today. He has been pretty adamant, as Plum said nothing is guaranteed but stay hopeful, in shape and keep it up.

The number of hires will heavily depend on the number of funded positions, which still hasn't been approved by the Board of Supervisors. That vote should be coming very soon though.

And to keep it more positive, the Vice Chair of the Board is a former CFEMS firefighter, so that also helps our cause as well.

Fire Chief actually, and he's known to be just as critical of the FD budget as he is all of the other county agency's budgets. Not trying to be a downer, it's just well known....

I don't think we get an actual offer till we graduate. But yeah, just pass the physical then go get measured for uniform etc, get issued your gear. That's pretty much it.

Your offer of employment comes before you even start the school. You're considered a CFEMS employee while you're a recruit.

As my esteem colleague BoxAlarm has said, your offer comes before you hit the fire academy. Once you are offered and hired, then you face approximately 24 weeks of classroom and actual field [yard] training.

Like most fire training schools in the central part of Virginia, you will be schooled and drilled everyday. There may be pop up tests throughout the training. There will be formal testing done weekly to see how you have achieved and retained the instruction.

If you aren't in shape physically get working on it.

Remember nothing is final as to becoming a firefighter, until you graduate and received your badge.

Starburst, you seem to believe the hiring and training isn't much, get you gear and you are in. You have a lot to learn my friend.

I was the chief instructor for a neighboring fire department for 5 years. I've seen a few come in that thought this was going to be an easy class. They didn't last too long.

Good luck to each and everyone of you.

That's not quite what I meant. He asked what was left in the hiring process. I was saying that passing the physical, getting your gear is all we have left to do UNTIL we start recruit school. Trust me, I'm preparing mentally and physically for the ride of my life!

    Thumbs up Academy

I absolutely would dedicate my life to getting through that academy should I be lucky enough to be selected. I've been training hard for years in preparation for an academy with any of the previous depts I've applied with. Praying to God this happens for me and all of you guys. About the academy...does chesterfield run the academy at the site we did the physical testing?

There is a little more than passing the physical and your gear.

There is the interview process, physic exam, medical exam, probably revisiting the background again and a few other things before you set foot in the academy. You'll receive any gear once you are hired and in the academy. Also any work uniforms will be issued too.

Any way, Good Luck to those aspiring for this job.

Once you began the academy, be sure all those in your class are there on graduation day.

So if they are looking for a July 7th academy it would need to be soon, correct?

The budget decisions (for all county departments) were delayed for 2 weeks.

One would like to think so...but then again, everyone thought that it would have been decided at the last meeting!

Guys I know the waiting sucks but stay positive. We are definitely starting another school, it's just a matter of how many. This is all worth the wait.
