Advanced Steel Cross-section Views
After this week's seminar presentation at Firehouse World in San Diego, many of the west coast-based fire officers who attended requested images of Boron steel inside roof pillars. In the 'W' section of my Vehicle Rescue 1-2-3 book, I have many images such as this. 'W' is for 'Work-around' which is where in the book I explain how to work around Advanced Steel such as Boron if you do not have an upgraded power rescue cutter unit.
I thought however since these images were being requested so much, I would share some additional pillar cross section images with Message Forum members.
The top shot is a cross section B-pillar from a Subaru forester. It shows multiple layers of steel plus the red which is a construction-grade rebar inside the hollow space. No Boron here; just multiple layers.
The middle image is a collection of pillars; all with Boron metal. Champion Rescue Tools allowed me to take a pix of their training props.
The bottom shot is a cross section B-pillar from a Dodge Caliber. Only the inner layer is Boron steel but it still is strong enough to shut down older cutters.
