That is all the information we currently have.

Kind of a shock considering the dire financial state of the city, and the fact that they had to pay them minimum wage less then a year ago... SFD... Are you a Scranton firefighter?

Hey BigGriff, guess my username does give that impression. However, I am not from Scranton. I also thought it was a shock they were hiring considering the situation the city is in. They are constantly browning out companies. However, I see they have received a SAFER grant, so I can only assume this is the reason for the hiring.

This is off their website (www.scrantonfire.com):

"Prior to 2011 the Scranton Fire Department was comprised of 150 firefighters divided among four shifts. They staffed seven engine companies, two truck companies, a rescue company and an assistant chief vehicle to provide emergency protection for all 76,000 residents in the citys' 26 square miles.

Currently the department has 131 firefighters divided among three shifts, three engine company (Engine Co. 9 and Engine Co. 15) have been permantly closed and the number of apparatus change daily due to brown out closures.

In 2012 the SFD received money from the SAFER grant. It was written to rehire all laid off firefighter and hire more. This would allow for the companies to be fully staffed daily. We are presently short due to the administrations decision to return a portion of the grant which involved the hiring of new firefighters. "

    Hope this helps
