    Default P25

What fiscal year was it finally REQUIRED that portable and mobile radios be P25 capable?

If it's the federal fiscal year you're talking about, it would be FY 2013. Federal year runs Oct. 1 to Sep. 30 and the P25 hit in March (didn't it?).

The FCC mandated everyone convert to narrow-band at the end of 2012. To my knowledge, there is no mandate to switch to P25. P25 is an interoperability decision, not an FCC decision. The narrowband requirements just mandated everyone narrow channels from 25 kHz to 12.5 kHz.

All communications equipment purchased with funds from the 2012 AFG period must be P25 complaint per the grant guidelines. The 2011 AFG award didn't require the equipment to P25 complaint. The P25 compliance drove the price of our vehicular repeater project up nearly 183%.

As noted above, the P25 requirement was for the grants, not the compliance with FCC regulations. Use your own money and you can buy whatever you want - use AFG money, it better be P25 now.
