San Diego Fire 73rd Fire Academy Graduation

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REmhUQ-jKSk

The 74th is currently underway in their 4th or 5th week of training, the department will re-interview for the 75th starting later this year, and word is there will be another test for a 76th academy in 2014. Stay in the game, this last class of 32 new San Diego City firefighters includes a 24 year old with a masters degree who studied at Harvard, US Naval Academy grad and former football player, several individuals with years of experience as firefighters both here in the US and overseas, a number of military vets, 18 paramedics, and former green beret just to name a few qualifications, not to mention most are bilingual. Ages ranged from 22 to 38. Study hard and prepare, prepare, prepare. The competition is fierce but if you want it, you can obtain it.

At least CAT 1 (that's where I'm at and I got the letter to update everything for an interview). Not sure if they dipped into CAT 2. Although I heard they had around 900 in CAT 1 so I would be surprised if they went into 2. Just my opinion though.

Can anyone tell me how the process works out there? I was stationed there while in the Navy. I've been on a major city fire dept for 3 years and I applied the other day. Can someone either PM me or write it on here, I'd appreciate it.

Not sure, a few of the employees at the test told me only 2700 applied and about half showed up to take the test.

At the 1230 test yesterday Id say there were roughly 500 there.

The 75th Academy just started Monday, so the next one will be sometime next year. Word is there will be 1 or 2 academies off the new list. Each academy has about 30-36 paid spots.

Ok so pretty good turn out but sounds like they are hiring quite a few more than 1 or which is always good.

Way smaller turn out then I expected. I tested at Phoenix last month and there were 2000 people on each session. Id assume there were barely over 1000 total. The city employees said the test before this they had over 5,000 applicants.

This is not an open position. The 75th fire academy is currently underway, the FF1 application opened as it does for all SDFD academies so that recruits can apply for the FF1 position and be promoted after completing the academy. The miramar fire academy is SDFD's academy. If one wishes to obtain employment with the department they must test, score well, interview well, and pass backgrounds like everyone else. Once these steps have been successfully completed they are selected for the SDFD/Miramar College Fire Academy.
