The video I saw was horrible as well. I couldn't believe the force behind that explosion. Thoughts and prayers out to everyone involved...

Just horrible...
I think we all have that one location in our jurisdiction that we all dread getting tones dropped for. I'm sure these guys/gals knew this was a dangerous response and suited up and went.
Heroes all.
Thoughts and prayers for them and their families.I am now a past chief and the views, opinions, and comments are mine and mine alone. I do not speak for any department or in any official capacity. Although, they would be smart to listen to me.

One firefighter (he was also a constable) who was thought to be missing was found in a hospital with injuries. Two paramedics are among the confirmed dead, and 3-5 firefighters are still listed as missing.
It would be my guess that the missing FF's were probably going to work on the fire while others worked on evacuations.
As of the 1300 news conference, they are still non-committal on fatalities, saying there are between 5 and 15. Certainly a lot less than the 60 a local EMS official was giving last night, although given the apparent damage, I'm sure that sounded reasonable at the time.
Building-by-building searches are still on-going. We can only hope that the vast majority are negative.
Sometimes, you just don't know, and simply can't imagine how bad it could be.Opinions my own. Standard disclaimers apply.
Everyone goes home. Safety begins with you.

God Bless.
We discussed this in the firehouse yesterday. Some strong opinions on why they were making a fire attack. Here is my take;
First in Engine goes to the fire to buy time for the evacuations underway. With probably 1500 of the 3000 persons living in West within a mile of the plant, the evacuations of neighborhoods and the nursing home becomes priority.
Following units assist in the evacuations, plant is a loss. You take the risk of loosing the first in engine to buy the evacuation time. Hard decision, risk a lot to save a lot. True heroes, hopefully their sacrifice bought the time needed to evacuate more residents.~Drew

Was thinking that given the number, they may be planning a mass memorial service.

In light of the tragic events in West, Texas, the women of FireWives.com (forum and FB group) have started a t-shirt fundraiser with all proceeds going to the West, Texas Volunteer Fire Department. T-shirts are $16 + $3.85 shipping. A minimum of $8 per shirt will be donated to West, Texas Volunteer Fire Department. The more t-shirts sold, the higher the donation! Share this with your wives and make a difference to the West, Texas VFD! Over 250 have been sold in just 48 hours. Pre-reserving t-shirts on the website will be available until May 12th. Shirts will be printed and mailed by Teespring 10-14 days after ordering ends. Again, The more sold, the less the shirts cost to print, the greater the donation!! Please share!
