They had a test summer of 2012, less than a year ago. Top notch department, with a very well put together testing process.

Last years test wasn't that difficult; Norman Hall's Firefighter Exam Prep is a good book for studying. Without giving specifics about the interview questions... prepare for a lot of scenario questions.

New additions to the hiring process include a physical ability test and a psychological exam, be prepared to travel, and on short notice!
Also, it seems that the current recruit class will be doing their nine mile run on at least one of the days of the written exam, they wont be far from the testing site, it may be nice of them to stop by and make a visit

You build up to the nine mile run, running is every Friday, and do a variety of PT the remaining days of the week. I believe the oral interview and physical ability test are on the same weekend.

$9.00 an hour while in recruit class?!? How on earth will I be able to support my family on that for any length of time!

$9 an hour is miserable, and 9 miles is quite a run...but if you guys havent seen this page it has some important dates on it...

Welcome to the Southeast. I used to work for Charleston County EMS before I got hired by a Northern Virginia fire department. They paid medics $38k/yr to start, on the same 24/48 (56 hour workweek) that the Charleston City FD runs. I'd have trouble supporting myself, much less supporting my wife and kids on a Charleston firefighter's salary. I'd suggest that you apply to Charleston County EMS as an EMT, or do the same at the hospitals - Roper, MUSC, Trident, etc. to pad your income. Expect the pay to be around $9-$10/hr.

Go to the bottom of this page, and click on "fire pay plan" at the bottom. These salary ranges are typical of the Southeast. You have to get deep into Florida, into Northern Virginia, or out west in Texas to see any decent pay.

Heard that there's only around 130 applications, and they want to hire at least 30 and POSSIBLY another class off of this process so if you do well on the written and have a clean record your chances are very good

This is the first year they've done a physical ability test. The test is from an outside company, similar to the CPAT but not exact, don't know specifics beyond that.

130 applicants!? Theyre only taking the top 130 test scores to interview...sooo essentially if you pass the written, you get an interview. Either way, everyone check your emails. I got my test date just now...
