Thread: Pa. Insurance Companies withdrawing workmans compensation coverage from VFD's

    NY mandates coverage (VFBL), but it's up to municipalities to provide it. Our county is "self-insured" for comp - as I understand it, the cost of a comp claim comes back to the township in question.

    VFBL does specifically cover assisting other departments, whether dispatched or not.

    The self-insured aspect spreads the cost out, but an extended claim could tax a township's resources.

    Note well that this is NOT exclusively a volunteer issue. Though as pointed out, the larger municipalities with non-volly departments (like Scranton as mentioned) can typically self-insure.
