Trying to join
I joined a firehouse about a year and a half ago and unfortunately between school and injuring myself at work I only made around 8 calls before I ended up getting injured. To make a long story short I ended up turning in my gear.
I have since finished school and able to return to full duty at work. I have reapplied to a diffrent fire house that is currently looking for volunteers and is within 3 minutes of where I live.
Any advice on how to handle this situation? I have not gotten an interview yet and I believe that because of my past they might not take me seriously. Would it be considered rude to call and follow up on application status and maybe try to get my foot in the door?
Also if I do get my interview how would you suggest I dress I've seen a lot of recommendation to wear suit and tie but is that for paid services or would you recommend it for volunteers as well? Thank you for your time and I apologize if this topic has been addressed before, I search the boards and didn't stumble across it.
never been a volunteer, but I think UI would find out who is head of so called hiring and call and get a set down with them. to see what might be going on, maybe they are a little busy or something else going on.
Have a good honset explanation of where you have been and where you want to go.
as far as what to wear if it is a good siz volunteer dept suit never hurt.
Thank you for the quick reply. There is currently 18 active volunteer spots but I believe only 15 of them are filled.
Follow up, be polite, and professional, in your inquiry.
If you get an intervew wear a suit.
If you didn't burn any bridges, you shouldn't have any problems. If you don't wear a suit and tie, at least wear a decent shirt and some slacks. Even more important is to be straight up and forthright during the interview. You left for legitimate reasons and shouldn't be ashamed of them.
Thanks for the great advise
