    Default Backdraft

Although it is corny, and not very factual, it is still one of my favorite movies and it is on HBO right now.

Donald 'Shadow' Rimgale: In a word, Brian, what is this job all about?

    Brian McCaffrey: Fire.

Donald 'Shadow' Rimgale: It's a living thing, Brian. It breathes, it eats, and it hates. The only way to beat it is to think like it. To know that this flame will spread this way across the door and up across the ceiling, not because of the physics of flammable liquids, but because it wants to. Some guys on this job, the fire owns them, makes 'em fight it on it's level, but the only way to truly kill it is to love it a little. Just like Ronald.

I ended up watching Backdraft last night because of this... Damn the power of subtle persuasion.

There was nothing subtle about it. I know your weakness.

Believe it or not I am going to use a clip from Backdraft while teaching my officer class tonight!!

    Another interesting Backdraft quote:

The only problem is that in this job is there's just no place to hide. It's not like having a bad day selling log cabins. You have a bad day here and somebody dies... and that's just not f***ing good enough.

Sorry, but I have a low tolerance for BS. It was a step above Chicago Fire, but barely. I expect movies like that to at least be somewhat believeable, just my thing, I like realism.

Nah, you are just another one of the azz munches on here that accuses me all the time of being an argumentative jerk. Yet when I post a topic like this, meant to be fun, you have to come into it and be a king sized ****** hat.

Golly, if I could only be as cool as you...

Movies are movies, nothing more. If it doesn't say documentary in front of the title it is nothing more than a story with literary license to change some facts and bend reality.

Oh, thanks for taking a topic that people were having fun with and turning it into another schitt hole. Nice work.

"Let's go probies' its lunch time!!".
    "This [lunch] better be good."

Ahh, the memories that stirred up, along with the old timers smoking in the house and on the rigs. You haven't lived until you've had to empty ash trays that seemed to migrate magically all over the station, or been hit by cigarette ashes, spit, and wet sunflower shells that came from out of the front windows and blew in the jumpseat windows.

Hey, at least it was shot in Chicago, using apparatus that looked like Chicago apparatus. Better than some of the stuff you see in movies.

That said, it wasn't a bad movie. They took a plot line that could have been set in any number of settings, and made is somewhat interesting to a firefighter. If nothing else, you can watch it and laugh at the stuff that's wrong.

I think I've got the DVD somewhere.
Opinions my own. Standard disclaimers apply.

I was at a wild land safety refresher the other day and someone was mad a hell about the movie. He said it was dangerous how it portrayed firefighters as supermen with out an scba most of the time! I have not seen the movie in a long time but remember thinking it was the coolest darn thing I hade ever seen when I was a kid. The line I always remember was when the pyro was trying to get paroled and Shadow asked him what he would like to do to the whole world......" Burn it all." I always liked Donald Sutherland after that movie.

The most realistic scene in the movie:

Adcox: So raise a glass, gents. To funny-looking Tim, and the McCaffrey brothers, who have gotten on each other's nerves and still managed after all these years to still be ****ed off at each other. Gentlemen...

    ALL: F**K YOU.

I've strongly suggested to the wife that she make like Jennifer Jason Leigh and get in the hose bed of our rig but she's still non-compliant.

Tim: How are we supposed to know if the floor is on fire in one of these?
Bull: When the doors open, if it's hot, don't get out.

Bull: When I was a kid, what meant most to me about this job was, no ifs, when somebody called the fire department, and we came. We just showed up. These guys, they just don't know how much I love 'em. You don't leave people hanging. It holds everything up doesn't it? Loyalty. I don't get it. Til death do us part, isn't that what you heard Helen? You go, we go, it's all the same, piece of **** without that isn't it? It's the end of everything.
