In our last meeting every member was given the task to come up with an idea for a fundraiser. Along with some of the others I have no ideas. We already do pancake feeds and of course the firemen ball. I'm just looking for fresh ideas.

Firefighter car wash? A bunch of the ladies will love to get their car washed by firefighters :D
Bid on a dinner for 5 or 8 cooked by the fireman eat at the station
Birthday parties at the fire station
Hold a 5 K race
Brat fry, hotdogs, burger cook out, we do this along a state highway during Memorial Day and make a few hundred bucks in about 3 hours.
Haunted path through the woods for halloween. We do this for 2 weekends in October and clear over $3K.
Gun raffle. Calendar raffle.

A direct mail appeal can be quite effective. Your real property people (county) may help you out with a list of addresses. For a small fee, ours will even print out their list on labels for us. I wouldn't recommend hiring one of those fund-raising companies - do it yourself.
You'll also hit people that may not even be aware that you hold the other events. This is doubly true if you have any seasonal population like we do in this area.
Depending on your locale, you might be able to get the stationery supplies free, or at a discount. Same with copies. We have one municipality in the area that has a machine that will fold, stuff, and stamp letters. The machine stuff is gratis - we just pay for postage. Don't know if they can stuff in a reply envelope too, so that might take an extra operation if you were to include one.
Unless your population numbers in the multiple thousands, one or two nights gathered around a few tables can probably do all work that needs to be done.
Put your best wordsmiths together to craft the letter, and print it on FD stationery, even if you create same specifically for the letter drive. You can also publicize other upcoming events.
This is most effective if you have a specific project in mind (major equipment, building fund, etc), although a general appeal can work, too.
Up until 4 years ago, we did our own mailout every year. Got the addresses from County, sorted them for best discounted bulk mailing rates, and spent a couple nights folding/stuffing/labeling. Then the fun of getting them in, depositing the checks, and later in the year sending a second request to those that we did not hear from. We net around $25k each year doing this for our area. 4 years ago, we started using an outside company. All we do now is provide a letter to them, a payment, and just deposit the checks. They handle everything else. Funny thing is....we still net around $25k a year....without all the work. Do some research and find a good reputable company and it will work out for you. Go cheap and you will get what you pay for.
Our other fund raiser is a Harley Davidson motorcycle raffle. We spend 3 months selling tickets and make payments to the dealer as we receive funds. We go and pick out a bike and some other items that brings our cost to about $25k. We sell only 2500 tickets at $20 each. Yes, we net around $25k on that one.
We sell address signs. They are aluminum and we apply the decals. They can but put on buildings or on mailboxes, etc. at the end of driveways. Helps us, the ambulance crew, UPS delivery, etc. find locations.
I do not know the size of your department, but we are small we played our local school facility( which i am also a member of ) in a basketball game. We charged at the gate and had a boot for donations. With concession and everything we made around 2500$. We also had jerseys made for both teams next year we are going to sell t-shirts hope to clear another grand off that. Hope this helps
We did the car wash for Autism this past month. Not a bad haul for four hours of work.
We also do a yearly golf outing, bowling outing, hot dog sale during the city wide yard sale day and t-shirt sales.
We've been thinking of a poker night and a bus trip to a local casino.
Birthday parties are a good fundraiser.
Our Birthday Parties include:
1.) 2 hours hall rental
2.) Fire Safety Presentation (10 minutes of fire safety tips plus firefighter dressing)
3.) Photos with Fireman/Firewoman
4.) Tour of station and equipment
5.) Ride on engine for birthday child and family.
6.) During warmer months, we set up a cone and a fire house on house pressure, and let the kids "put out the fire" aka knock over the cone. A firefighter holds the line as a backup and helps them operate the bale.
7.) Firefighter Goody bag with fire prevention coloring book, crayons, stickers, etc.

Pitt Beef sales are also really good.
I took a class at a fire station that did Sex Toy Bingo. They made over 5,000 NET profit on one night. It was bingo, but you won sex toys.
