Default Vacants..hooah...what are they good for..absolutely nuthin!!

    http://www.fresnobee.com/2013/05/18/...southwest.html

A homeless person staying in a vacant southwest Fresno house sustained smoke inhalation and minor burns in a fire early Saturday caused when a candle was placed too close to combustible materials, the Fire Department said.
The fire, which started in the rear of the home, was reported about 4:35 a.m. at 2320 S. Lily Ave.
The injuries were sustained when the person tried to drag burning material out of the house.
Chalk up another reason to search vacants.

Trying to explain to Bobby about the need to search any building, let alone a vacant structure would be like trying to explain the concept of rocket science to a medieval peasant.

Demographics. Unemployment rate. Number of vacant structures. Number of homeless.

Ya, there are a whole bunch of reasons.

I fully understand the need to search any building that is known to be occupied or likely occupied.

The thing is, vacant and abandoned buildings in this area don't fall into either classification.

I'm pretty sure that isn't an official classification. You made that up. But I did notice that you didn't say unoccupied. And just so we are clear, which area are you referring? Your VFD, or your combo? Your knack for intermingling those two so you can be right, gives me motion sickness.

So LA, what would you say the overwhelming cause of fires in vacants would be? Spontaneous combustion? Mice with matches?

Given that my combo department has a fire in a vacant once every 3-4 years, and my VFD has one every 5 or so years, I really don't have much of a data set to tell you that.

I will say that from 2010-2013 we did have a extraordinary amount, but they were all caused by brush fires, and they were all fully involved or on the ground on arrival.

I can tell you that the last one at my VFD was a lightning strike.

And that one was already on the ground when we arrived.

Both my combo and VFD defines buildings as follows:

    Abandoned

    Vacant

    Occupied

At my combo and VFD, the resources and capabilities differ widely, and when thinking about response, that needs to be kept in mind.

As far as your motion sickness, may I suggest a shot of Jack Daniels. It has always stabilized me.
