Default Is this a viable grant idea??

Just curious due to the new NFPA Standard for 10 year recomendation for turnout gear, if we have gear that we received a grant for in 2004 would it be worth a try to write for new gear when it hits the ten year mark? Also besides washing are their other requirments that would need to be meet to make this a viable request. Also am wondering about cylinders for our SCBA, the carbon fiber units with a 15 year life. Thanks in advance for the help.

From a peer point of view. Your narrative needs to be heavy on "why have you not set up a program" to replace the grant gear on your own, PPE and cylinders.

AFG is set up to help achieve a standard. Once the standard is achieved, it is expected that the department will maintain that standard.

thanks for the input, makes sense. I guess for us it really boiles down to funding it on our own.

Yes unfortunately with the limited amount of money available and the number of requests being received AFG has pretty much taken the position that one you have had a bite at the apple for anything, they are not going to let you come back for a second bite. Just too many departments that have not had that first bite still left out here. They also follow a logic that if they bailed you out of one situation involving lack of proper financial planning, they are not going to do it twice. This issue would probably not be an issue if we still had $800-750 million in the program like we did at one time.

As it has been pointed out putting in a grant request for TO is out of the question. The SCBA maybe a different story as there is not enough info to make a determination.

    1) Has the department received an AFG grant for SCBA?

    If not.

    2) What NFPA edition do the current SCBA fall under?

    3) How old are the SCBA?

We are kinda in the same boat. We are a small rural fire department and recieved an AFG grant in 2003 for 5 set of turn outs. Back then we only had 6 firefighters and we were able to fund one set. We only have a $8,000 a year budget. Take out fuel and maintanence on a fleet that avergages 34 yrs old we dont have much left. How ever we have been able to slowly buy two more sets of turn outs and wild land PPE for ALL our firefighters since 2003.

Problem now is we have recruited and now have 12 firefighters and need 4 more sets of structure PPE for 4 firefighters that have none now. Were do have a program to buy one pair of PPE pants or coat per year but thats all we can afford. So were asking for 4 more sets for firefighters that dont have structure PPE now. We are hoping that becuase we are trying hard to fund PPE on our own and that with only $8,000 budget its just impossible to keep up that AFG will grace us one final time.

Kind of boils down to whether or not there is something else that might rank higher. After all anything under 8 years old is considered compliant so with only needing 4 sets you're 66.6% compliant. You'll be going against those that are 0% compliant, so by the numbers it's not the best request on it's own. You will be marking that 4 people don't have PPE, so that helps a bit but not a huge amount to the point I think it will turn the tables in your favor.

With the changes in scoring in the computer side you can get one project reviewed and one not, so it isn't the all or none that is used to be. Still wouldn't aim for a laundry list, or mixing high and low dollar requests where it looks like you could afford one with the matching from the other, but it isn't as critical of a process as it used to be. Money is still tight so don't want to ask for too much, but if there are other things you need don't just hang the one chance per year on the PPE by itself.

Thanks for all the input, I have been a way from writing any FG for a few years and wanted some input from those that were still on top of things. I was guessing that requesting more gear may not be a viable option, so on to plan B.
