    Default PAT Maintenance Test Question

My Department calls our maintenance test a JRPAT, which is basically the Fire Fighter Combat Challenge. How many departments out there require a warm up or some type of stretching prior to taking your PAT? In our department you show up at the Fire Training Center, throw on your weighted vest and just take the test. We are a safety minded department and strive through different programs to reduce injuries and time away from the job. Am I wrong in thinking a warm up and stretching will reduce injuries during testing? I am thinking of making this suggestion to our Safety and PT Committees. Thanks for your input.

Yes, I was trying to find out if other departments offered some type of sturctured warm up that was required in an effort to reduce injuries.

Some like to stretch and others do not

Do you want to make it mandatory?

Is your department experiencing a large number of injuries currently with the program?

The evidence that stretching will have a significant impact on injury reduction is controversial at best. As long as the candidates are allowed a warm up/stretching phase prior to the test, I think you are all good.

Not warming up before a test like this is like starting your car in -20 degree weather and burying the needle on the tach. You are asking for an injury. It is a no brainer to warm up.

Warming up and stretching are two different things.

And no, a cars engine and the human bio-mechanical machine are two completely different items as well.

I run the CPAT cold all the time 'cold', no injuries from it to date. You think cheetah's jog a few miles before they go after their prey?
