Default Paul Conway vs. Cairns 880 vs Cairns 1044

Relatively new to the fire service and looking to purchase a new helmet. My department issues the Cairns 1010. I like it okay, but it's a bit heavy/bulky to me. I'm trying to decide between the Paul Conway American Classic, Cairns 880, and Cairns 1044. Comfort, style, protection and durability are my biggest concerns.

    Any recommendations or suggestions?

Well, I wear a N5A new Yorker, sooo..... Well, I have an extraordinarily large neck. Not in your list but I have heard really good things about the Phenix leather helmet.

Between 3 FDs and teaching I currently use a 1044, a 1010, a Chieftan traditional, and a Morning Pride Ben 2. While they are all good helmets I prefer the 1044 and the Chieftan.

I have a Phenix leather, 880 and 1044. I wear the 880 at my vollie house, and I love that it's low profile, light, and well balanced. The cons of it are that it's built for smaller heads, and if you're a big guy overall, it looks like you're wearing a kids toy helmet.
The 1044 was my primary lid for years, now bumped back to training lid, and it is incredible for not being a leather. The only real difference between it and the 1010 is how the shell is colored, but for some reason, I think it just feels better than our issued 1010. I can't really describe what feels different about it, try one and see for yourself.

You should give the new EV1 from Morning Pride a try before you buy anything, One of our guy's just got 1 and I gotta say it is the most comfortable Traditional helmet I have ever had on. It's nothing like the old Ben 2. This sits lower and is way lighter and better balanced than anything else out there. If you don't care for the 1010 your proly not gonna like the 1044 because there the same helmet only difference is the 1044 has dull finish. The EV1 also has the dull finish.

Im with Conrad, we are issued either then 1010 or the MP Ben 2 (depending on which company wins the bid for contract that year) but the majority of us, me included, prefer to sport the N5a Leather. Nothing quite like a leather helmet. Leather Forever. Stay safe.

The first thing you should do is determine if your department allows members to use any PPE other than what was issued to them. Many departments require members to wear only departmentally-issued items due to insurance and workers compensation issues.

I loved my N5A leather helmet, but it lasted about 10 years (Hmmm, interesting that that is the new service life of helmets) before the back brim essentially disintegrated. Then I bought an N6A, I never had the relationship with that helmet that i did with the old school N5A. I thought it was top heavy, just plain heavy, and uncomfortable. The frst on lasted about 5 years before it too started to fall apart, the replacement, under warranty, did roughly the same thing a few years later. I like the leather, but for the money I can buy 2 or 3 pleather helmets, but sadly I haven't had to. They are holding up far better than the leathers did for me.

Before anybody jumps me about it, I maintained them, I kept them clean and touched up the paint. I have no explanation for their demise but now they are wall ornaments.

I like the 880..I use a 1010 with defender shield as my dept issue and it SUCKS..my prior 1010 worked wonders but for the size of my head and the size of the 880, I like it best
