    Default paid vs. volly

Okay, what dictates paying firefighters or not? Is it matter of necessity to pay some dept. or is it the town or city's privilege to be able to have paid professionals? There are seemingly no difference from one town to another but some are paid and some are not. The Paid and Volly departments could have high or low populations/ population densities. Some could have high rises and others do not. Some have a high structure fire rate/risk and some do not. Seems to me that it all depends on if tax payers wanna pay for it or not.

    For the most part.....

Call volume. # of available volunteers to answer the calls.

Any town that has enough volunteers answering calls to not run short is probably not going to pay anyone. When the number of volunteers is not adequate....paying people takes over.

And/Or if the number of calls is simply higher than what volunteers can respond to....paid fits that bill.

You can and will find examples that prove this theory wrong in both ways. I know of a volunteer area that answers lots of runs and a paid area that barely answers any calls. Why is one paid and one vol? No idea.

not a troll... just want to hear some opinions on why some people work their butts off risking their life everyday, other places are not doing half as much but reaping all the benefits and getting paid more.
