Lightbulb CAFS users: Foam Brand Selection?

    Hey fellas...

We're within about three to four months of taking delivery of a new CAFS pumper at my VFD. It's going to have a single 40-gallon cell on it.

I'm looking to see what kind of experience some of our board members have with the different brands of foam for their CAFS systems? Different departments in our area seem to be split between National Knockdown and Silvex. From having some brief discussions, it sounds like the Silvex has been chosen because it's a little less expensive than the Knockdown, but we're hearing great things about the performance of the Knockdown.

How about you all? Personal experiences, other recommendations, anything else?

    Thanks in advance...

We've been using National Foam's Knockdown product since 2003 in our CAFS truck with absolutely no complaints.

While I've never heard anything bad about Silvex, we chose Knockdown based on the support and training provided many times by Jim Cotrell & associates (see http://www.combatsupportproducts.com

We use Phos Chek as it was highly recommended to us by others with lots of experience. We're very satisfied with it. Another department with good experience uses National Foam and they are happy with it. Silvex has a good name but I don't know much else about it. One important point - pick one and stay with it. You don't want to have to be cleaning out your system to change foam brands.

    Thanks for the feedback, fellas.

CE, indeed that's our plan. We're ordering 120 gallons to start with and plan on transitioning all foam-equipped rigs in the county to whatever we choose for our CAFS system.

we use phos-check also and have had good results with it.
As CE stated don't mix brands in any tank without cleaning the system first.
Have CAFS on an engine & a brush truck.

I've always heard mixing B foams is bad news, but doesn't it really make a difference with the Class A stuff?

We've never mixed, but our foam of choice is no longer easily available locally so we're switching. Out of caution, we're not adding any to our foam cell on the truck until we use what's left of the original brand, which we'll then flush. I guess I just didn't think it was the end of the world on the Class A stuff.
