Only my second test. Yes in AZ. That being said if I do get a chance to interview, it would be my first one. I've been working very hard on my interviewing, but there is a good chance that I won't kill it on my first try. I understand the importance of the interviews, but also you can't get one without scoring well enough on a test. No doubt that's an awesome score preference points or not. I'm just trying to get information for the next time I test if this one doesn't work out.

The person that I heard scored a 96 was with the curve. All the scores given are after the curve and with the preference points added. It doesn't matter if it's a Chief's son, a Captains son or someone who has zero family on the job. They studied well, they tested well and now they've put themselves in a good spot. As for leveling the playing field if you don't have family on the job, well the fire service is all about networking and if you don't have that last name or tie to someone within, you have to work a little harder. I personally have zero family on. I put in the time through schooling, I volunteered a lot with the department and union through groups that anyone can join, and I got my face and name out there through riding at various stations. It took a lot of time away from my family to do so, but I made it work because this was the career I wanted. Having family on the job doesn't increase your test score either. It may be beneficial in your interview, but as for your test, it's not. That's all done through through the City of Phoenix Personnel Department.

That's how you can level the playing field though. How many ride a longs have you been on? How much have you volunteered? What are you doing for yourself education wise(besides the basics like your EMT)? You should be able to sit down in front of an oral board, answer the questions and leave with them saying and thinking without a doubt that you're a solid candidate and you want this job. Because that's what it takes. Mediocre and even good interviews won't get you the job. It's too competitive right now. They want the best of the best. What have you done to prepare yourself for this job, should be a loaded answer. For some reason, that question and why do you want to be a firefighter are the hardest to answer for most people. Hope that helps a little bit.

Helps a ton. I have spent time at one station, but realize that is not enough and I need to network a lot more than I have.

If your score doesn't get you an interview this time around, you have a great chance that you could get an interview next time around. May be a blessing in disguise to give you more time to prepare yourself for that interview and 20 minutes to tell a panel why they should work with you for the next 25 years. Especially if you don't have a lot of experience in fire oral boards. You may get an interview this time around! All we know for sure right now is we're hiring 7. They may come out and say, "well....we're hiring 30 now".

Thanks for all your help again. I have an interview at Benson, AZ and the SDFD test this week, and long beach after that!

I scored a 90 on the exam, do you think my score will be high enough for a first round interview? Does anyone know about how many will be invited for the first round? Any info would help out. Thanks!

    Let me understand this:

They are currently retaining 6 red shirts, waiting for an academy.

They incur the cost of a test, have thousands of people apply, test, rack and stack, and judge.. just to hire one person off of that list?

Is it even worth it to have an academy with that few people? How can they justify the expense of overtime, training, and misc. costs associated with an academy for just that small amount. Seems like a waste of time, and money. Is this list going to last a few years? Or will they test again when they need 7 more people?

My sentiments exactly, at first I didn't understand administering an exam for 4,000 people just to hire basically 1 person. But from what I've gathered the next academy will be off this list as well since theyre expecting retirements in 2 years.

    Just speculation, who knows.

The academy is now scheduled for March. The department is waiting on the city to hopefully approve a larger academy, which is causing the delay. Once this is approved or denied, notifications will be sent out for interviews.

As for the exam, they had to administer an exam because the previous list was expiring and the city has to the always have a list to hire from. The previous list was just about completely exhausted and the department didn't want to go any lower on the test scores. For example, the last interviews they had, because of how long the list was going for, there were 80 no shows to the first round interviews. The department was approved for a rescue, which opened up 7 positions. If that's all the funding they were approved for, they have to put them through or they'll lose that rescue and the positions it opens up. There are other cities that will join in and each city pays a specific cost for each of their recruits. Technically other cities and their recruits can definitely help offset the costs for the city and their own recruits. The city is waiting on approval through grant money to get 12 more additional positions for this academy, which has delayed the interview process and academy by a few weeks. There's no exact word yet but it sounds like they may be going down to 85 or 86 for interviews. That's not for sure though. The $95k fine isn't causing any setback. With Phoenix's budget, that's not much of a hit for a department that serves the 6th largest city in the country. Be prepared and ready for your interview, because any day now letters may go out. Good luck!

@phx123, Thank you for the update(s). Do you know which scores are being used for the first round interview? Any word on when the second round interview will happen? Again, thank you.

Academy class 14-1 was pushed back to a start date of April 1st. It looks as though we'll be hiring for 19 spots now. First round interviews have been sent out by email and are scheduled for the week of January 6th-10th. The second round interviews will be shortly after and are scheduled for January 27th-30th. These 2nd round interview invites will also be sent out by email. I haven't heard the exact score we went down to, but the lowest score I have heard so far is an 87. Best of luck to everyone! It's an amazing department to work!
