    Default Fire Academy or EMT-B?

I just got into my local FD after applying for volunteer and going through a group interview and an orientation that I attended yesterday. The department wants to train the guys we have for 2 months and decide who's worth sending to academy in January depending on how well we respond to their training regimen. I want to work hard and learning the ropes and show them that I belong in this profession so they will send me to fire academy, but I really think this is going to be hard to do as I am currently in my EMT-B. It will be really hard to focus on both at the same time and give the same focus in each. I plan on asking the chief what I should do, but I think I have to decide on dropping out of one of the two. My parents keep telling me that I need to finish my EMT-B but in my opinion, the EMT-B will always be there, whereas Fire Academy will not. I'm torn on what to do. Any thoughts or suggestions would really help me out.

So how much longer is emt school

How many days a week do you go?

How many days a week will there be volunteer training?

Do you know how many you are competing against for the fire academy?

Do you just want to volunteer or go full time at some point

    What state are you in

My EMT school ends mid-December and it is 3 days a week, MWF from 6:00 to 9:30 PM.
I haven't been given any info on how long volunteer training or fire academy. I really want to go full time at some point. I am in Illinois. We were told to keep Wednesday nights open as we would have to be at the fire house for conferences and my class gets in the way of this. From what I understand, it is hard to get into fire academy, but that's based off of hearsay which is why I would rather drop the EMT part and focus on the fire part right now. But then again it is hard when I don't know the specific days; I have only been told that the training through the 2 months before fire academy will take up a lot of time and I know I can't balance that with the EMT as this class already has a bunch of information being thrown at me already.

    1. Suggest finish emt not that much longer

    2. Find out what is required to apply for career depts in your state
You can check different city web sites

    3. After emt get whatever is needed to apply

    4. If you decide to stay in school set down with the chief and explain that you would like to finish school, but would like to be considered for the academy also

IFC you do a search with Illinois , there have been questions before

If they will be making the selections in 2 months, EMT will almost be over.

If the department will be footing the bill, take advantage of the opportunity.

Agree with all - finish EMT now that you've started it. Talk to the chief, or other appropriate officer. Odds are they've dealt with this before.
Opinions my own. Standard disclaimers apply.

I agree with the others, finish EMT. Most depts. around here could care less about the fire academy but it's a requirement to have EMT prior to even testing.

I would talk to the chief, explain your situation and go from there.

Consider the following factors before you decide. Less than a month to finish EMT, why drop and start again? Add to that who is paying for your EMT class? If it is you my bet is you are way beyond the point of receiving any refund so unless you can afford to throw away the cost of the class stay in EMT.

Asfar as being there for conferences and meetings it would seem they could accomodate you and meet with you earlier in the day or on another day to meet that requirement.

You are almost finished with your EMT class.
You might have a chance at the fire academy if you meet their training criteria.

    No brainer in my opinion.
Talk to them and explain that you don't want to waste several months of EMT class and have to drop out this near completion.
They'll respect you for being responsible & finishing what you have already committed to.

I dont mean to sound mean but as someone who has been thru EMT, Paramedic and now a masters degree in nursing EMT shcool is not hard, you should be able to do both, both opportunities may never come again, buckle down, turn off the TV and geterdone
