Default Wearing PPE from different Dept

    Heys guys/gals,
I'm a copy in a rural county Dept. And I've came across some of our members who volunteer for a city dept. wearing the City gear instead of what was issued to them by my Dept. They're reasoning is that the city gear is newer so they want to wear it.

Has anyone else ran into this and was it or is it a problem?

Might be a problem with the city dept if it gets damaged unless they have permission to use it

This is an internal fire department policy issue. What do your rules and regs say about turnout gear? My #1 POC FD says inits rules and regs that any gear purchased by any individual firefighter must match the gear in use in color and reflective striping and must meet current NFPA. So let's say you wanted buy your own helmet, and a few have, it must match the color for your rank, helmet or shield, and it must meet current NFPA at the time of purchase.

The only times that we're wearing our issued gear outside of our own department's activities is when we're training or perhaps doing a ride-along. In all of the departments I've been associated with, it was understood you're to wear the PPE you were issued with that department.

Do they have permission from the city VFD?

    I agree.

In addition, oftentimes other components of the city, county, or whatever have a stake in the issue. For example, in my department, we must wear only what is issued by the city. The city attorney and HR are of the opinion that if you are wearing city-issued equipment that is maintained by the city's PPE vendor, then Workers' Comp has fewer issues to deal with when investigating injuries.

Good, bad, or indifferent, that just our our city does it. I'm sure others have the same mindset.

Sounds like a personnel issue. Our city would throw a fit if they found out they were wearing issued equipment in their volunteer department.
