Well, it was lunch time and he needed to head back and prep for his class and I had to go back home and go to my #1 POC FD's annual fund raiser. I wouldn't have minded sitting dwn to talk longer over a couple of beers.

Clearly these are two long term members of the fire service who are very passionate about the fire service. Even before the sit down, what they had in common far out-weighed their differences. Just like the rest of us. What is also clear is that too many of us forget that at times when we hit the keyboard.
What surprises me is that the sit down was really needed. I think both brothers have articulated their positions and their reasons for maintaining them quite well. The gap between my department (FDNY) and LAFE's vollie department is about as big as it gets. I would not expect the fire operations to be the same. There are REALLY difficult choices to be made at times by IC's regardless of the department or location. The decisions made are not always popular and even the guy making the call won't necessarily like it.
Those who sit at their keyboard and label LAFE or anyone else a coward are way out of line. We have no obligation whatsoever to "die trying". Everything should be a CALCULATED risk, based on conditions encountered and life hazard present. Yes, the job is dangerous and brothers have been killed. But they didn't go in expecting to die. Something unforseen generally causes the deaths within fire buildings. Anyone who claims otherwise is a phony or a nutjob. I have little use for either one on the fireground.

The difference is that LAFE has made it clear he has no obligation to try at all unless a specific criteria is met that exceeds the capabilities of any department. Including yours.

Your right buddy --you post something that you KNOW is going to stir up controversy -and then you blow up when it happens? And you call other people trolls and attention wh0res ? You really need to step back and take a deep breath.

Been away at a forty hour leadership class for the last four days. ( not that anyone would notice)

I did not feel the earth stop turning, but I did have various levels of gastro-intestinal distress over the four days. Might not be connected, but I can't rule it out now.

You are so right. I had no idea that mentioning having lunch with someone would open the flood gates for people to bring up stuff that was totally unrelated to having lunch and the conversation I had with him was so controversial. Interesting perhaps, but that lunch is controversial is ridiculous, and even you know it.

It is illegal and immoral to quote yourself in this or any other forum. I did not make the rules. The last guy to quote himself disappeared, I think he's caught in some kind of forum limbo cyber world. Wouldn't be so bad if it was a Playboy or Maxim forum but I heard it was a Modern Water Treatment Facilities Magazine forum.

Had a very good time talking to Don and sharing ideas.

Surprisingly, at no time did the restaurant staff have to remove the knives, forks or other pointy objects from the table. I would have loved to talk awhile longer, but as he said I had to get back and finish setting up my classroom.

Wow!! So there are classes on how to avoid doing one's job?

How much of your pay are you giving back. Since you believe government (at all levels) pays too much for labor.

It is a good thing ya'll met for lunch. Had it been breakfast, a fight would have surely broken out. One a staunch supporter of approaching the pancake aggressively and dousing it with a straight stream of maple syrup, then tearing into it with the fork ASAP. The other using a defensive approach and fogging the syrup on the pancake until it cools enough to permit safe entry.

    Actually I did have pancakes.

He did look a little bit strangely at me utilized as I used the transitional syrup attack when I initially hit the pancakes with a large flow before completing the application with a smaller flow.

Seriously, we did have a very good conversation and I think we both left with a better understanding of the other's thought process.

Boy, I sure learned a lot at the leadership class! I now recognize this as direct and honest communication with a subordinate designed to trigger an emotional reaction. Loss of respect, legal consequences, and moral violations.
    Well done sir!
