Default Did you feel the Earth stop turning today?

Well, it happened. I met Bob Callahan, AKA LaFireEducator, today for lunch in Wisconsin Dells.

We had an interesting conversation and believe it or not we agreed on many things. After talking to him I understand why he is so staunch in his safety culture for his volunteer fire department. They suffer from the same issues that many volunteer fire departments do and for them it makes sense. It may not be what you would do, but it is what they have to do for the immediate future.

I am sure at some point Bobby and I will butt heads again, but it was nice to meet him and put a face and a personality to the name.

I am the handsome devil to the left. which makes Bobby the one on the right.

Did he say how much of his pay he is going to give back since he believes government employees are overpaid? He ran and hid from that statement.

my pay dang sure doesn't come from the government , I worked for 25 years as a framing carpenter. Most of the time as a subcontractor. paid by the foot - if I didn't work fast , I made less money, if I didn't do it RIGHT, I did it over. It was very easy to tell if I did a good job- my finished work was a tangible object that could (and was) be inspected. Excuses didn't fly -if you didn't produce, you didn't get paid. Having said that, I have worked part time for FEMA since Katrina, (hourly pay/no benefits) but have since resigned from that "job"

Excellent. LAFE works for a public agency and is complaining about the high cost of government.

You chose to be framing carpenter. Good for you. I chose to be a firefighter.

    Alright.... Anyway....

Fyred, sorry I couldn't come with you, damn ambulance shift.

LA, I'm actually slightly annoyed to have missed meeting you, would have been nice to meet and talk face to face so I could get an idea of the kind of person you are in person, vs. a bunch of keystrokes on the screen. Maybe I would have found out that you're not quite as bad as you're keystrokes paint you to be here.

    Oh well, next time.

Considering the topic is LAFE, I'll take that as a compliment.

He is an embarassment to the fire service. Why he is allowed to teach anything fire related is more than a mystery.

You are an embarassment to this forum with your idiotic need to stalk any topic that has to do with LA and post unrelated crap in it. Just like your brainless circular logic that never really answers a political question you have become that same pot stirrer when it comes to LA. This topic had nothing to do with pay, the government shut down, or any past topic regarding LA, it had to do with me having lunch and a conversation with him.

I wasn't going to comment, but I find it too irresistible not to. I applaud Bob for doing what he thinks is the right thing for his agency. But I draw the line at three things:

His constant tendency to throw other agencies under the bus, and

His mindset of "Fuchk the civilians. They got themselves into the schit, let them get themselves out of the schit."

And lastly, using the excuse of "safety" as smoke and mirrors to disguise his own cowardice.

I have no desire to meet him in person. Don if you say he's a nice guy, that's cool, I take your word for it.

BFF's? I wouldn't necessarily say that. But maybe not such antagonistic adversaries.

I didn't say I agree with everything he says. I said I understand why he has the position he does regarding his volly FD and safety.

I don't believe Bob is a bad guy. Frankly, I met him, no one else here has.
