    Default Community Paramedic definition

From the AFG site that opened this morning, this is what they're defining Community Paramedic as:

A Community Paramedic (CP) is a licensed or certified paramedic who has additional training in physiology, disease processes, injury and illness prevention, and medical system navigation. By design, the Community Paramedic is intended to be a provider of public health services to the elderly, underserved, and chronic condition-patient populations by providing primary care as an extension of a physician, while acting as the patient's advocate to connect them to a variety of beneficial social services outside the emergency department or hospital. Community Paramedics provide health assessment, chronic disease monitoring and education, medication care and prescription regime compliance, immunizations and vaccinations, laboratory specimen collection, hospital discharge follow-up care, and minor medical procedures approved by the ambulance medical director.
This innovation opportunity lies in tying the attributes of fire-based Advanced Life Support services - mobile, reliable, universally accessed, broadly trained for multi-condition recognition and treatment ---to the broader medical and public health community.
A Community Paramedic Program should seek to establish a sustainable model for improving the use of existing EMS providers through scope of practice flexibility and coordination with other health providers. A CP program has the potential to: 1) Reduce health system expenditures 2) Become self-sustaining 3) Enhance public health and safety by meaningfully supporting the health and social welfare needs of the community.

Pretty sad that the first two potentials to a CP program are related to money. Patient care is LAST. Not saying I am against the program. I am actually quite intrigued by the idea and the opportunities it presents to the fire service.

These are generally non-emergency Paramedics, handling routine calls for those in need of advanced care but not in a position to be somewhere for it. Dialysis patients, cancer patients, etc. Worked with a few departments that have these programs, the callers dial something other than 911 to have someone come out and check when they're not feeling good to make sure it is or isn't something that needs transport to a hospital. Otherwise they would dial 911 for a non-emergency situation, tying up a crew of 2 and an ambulance for who knows how long. Numbering them really isn't accurate from what I've seen, all three are tied together very closely. Saves money not running a bus to 1 call, improves service by keeping it available for a true 911 call. Paramedic responds to 911 calls if needed, otherwise reduces load on 911, ER, and everything in between.
