Default Does your organization intend to provide a financial match greater than the required?

Anyone want to comment on this question (it's in the Fire Dept Characteristics - Part II). It's not a required question. Think it would to not answer it?

Does your organization intend to provide a financial match greater than the required amount?
If yes, how much additional funds is you department/agency willing to contribute? Please fill in the amount in the box to the right.

The answer to the question is "yes". It shows that you are invested in the project and will do what it takes to get it done. How much extra depends on your situation, but even if it $500, it shows that you are committed to getting it done.

Think of the reviewer, "Does this person want to do what it takes and is willing to sacrifice, or are they looking for a hand-out?" As the reviewer, which do you choose to fund?

Not really the situation, adding $500 isn't going to sway a reviewer off of the idea that someone is asking for a handout versus doing the right thing. By this point the financial argument has already been made since it's earlier in the application. So that decision isn't being made on that screen, it's just for the calculation in the budget page since that possibility was missing last year.

Adding $10-20k, maybe helps but depending on whether or not where that's coming from is addressed it's going to hurt. If it's from savings/budget, was that from 1 year? If so why isn't the department financing and using that annual amount to make payments if it's such a need? Better to reduce the cost of the project and show you're broke than admit money exists. Too much to address in too little space to say how the extra match is coming to be, and if it's savings what if it isn't there when the grant comes in? Already seen that a few times where truck died, or other major emergency expense which blew the extra match. Grant comes in, didn't have extra match anymore, lost award. At least if it isn't mentioned you aren't committed to it, and there's always something in the price range at the lower price asking for normal match.

I did not mean the amount so much as a percentage. If you are willing to give another 5-10%, I would think it may give some sway to the reviewer. Granted I have never been one, but it would help sway me all other things being equal.

Heard it go both ways from reviewers, but remember the computer gets it first and all other things being equal the dollar amount is scored, so the one reducing the price scores better on the same project. So that could be the difference between making Peer or not. Things being so tight the computer is always the first hurdle.
