    Default FDNY firefighter records

My great-uncle was a firefighter for FDNY 1955-1976. He meant a lot to me, but passed away last year before I got the call to be a firefighter. Now I want to know more.
Surprisingly his kids don't know much and aren't sure they even have a photo of him in gear. My great-aunt is feeble and hard to talk to anymore.
My Dad said he thought my uncle was a Battalion Chief, but his obit said Captain. All I can remember is his helmet on the mantle when we'd visit. (they live a few thousand miles away).
I've tried searching online for any records but nothing comes up. There seem to be a lot of FDNY organizations but I don't know which one would apply.
Is there a centralized place to start? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Contact Jack Lerch in the Mand Library, at the FDNY Training Academy on Randalls Island. If he does not know how to obtain that info, I bet he could point you in the right direction.
