    Default SCBA Request Questions

We applied last year for SCBA's and I believe the reason we did not get them was because we tried to equip the riding positions on our reserve engine as well as front line apparatus. We did so because ISO requires that even the reserve be equipped, but understand that this appears a little greedy in AFG's eyes. My question is how do I show that we are not trying to equip the reserve in the electronic scoring? We have entered the apparatus in the matrix, but the riding positions totals all engines, including the reserve. We have 27 riding positions, but only want to equip 22 (that's taking out the riding positions on the reserve). We are only requesting 20 complete SCBA's with extra cylinders as we have (2) 2007 Standard units. Also, does anyone have any cap numbers on SCBA's?

The AFG allows you to apply for SCBA up to the number of seated positions, but is not a requirement to do so. You can apply for less than the number of seated positions. In your case, the need is for 20 apply for 20.

If it has equipment on it ready to respond, it's not a reserve piece.

And like Andy alluded to you can ask for however many SCBA you need up to the number of seats but doesn't mean that you have to. That's only a computer scoring thing for the most part anyway in comparing seats to quantity requested. Would have been other reasons it wasn't funded, could be as simple as other people scored higher based on need whether they run more or have older stuff. Happens in a competition this tight.

For scba's do they only could riding seats in a pumper? most of our fire departments only have one.pumper but need more than 4 or 6 scba's. Can they count tanker seats or brush truck seats?

Somewhere in this forum there was a discussion of RIT packs and what category to put them under in the grant app. Can't seem to get the search to find what I'm looking for.

NFPA 1720 requires a minimum complement of firefighters for compliance, the number that's been agreed upon is 12 SCBA per department. That allows for attack team, search team, and ventilation team with 6 outside for 2in/2out compliance.

Regardless of the number of seats all department need a minimum of 12 SCBA to operate, and it's been funded without issues. We have a lot of departments like that we work with.

Also the same goes for portable radios, 12 minimum for department apparatus, 13 if there's no department owned Chief's vehicle. Chief gets portable and mobile for POV, but only Chief, not Assistant, Deputy, etc.

RIT SCBA are under the RIT Pack heading in Equipment, not PPE.

Ok that's great news. We only have 12 firefighters and at present have only four 2007 edition SCBA. Would it be better to ask for 8 more to make the 12 even if realistically rarely are all 12 firefighters on scene? Or can we ask for just 4 more. The 5% match would be over $2,200 and that's going to be a chore of us to match. since our annual budget is Approx $7,500. I want to give us the best chances of being funding.

You can go for less, if it's unrealistic that you'll double in size and get 12-15 average per scene then there's no reason for you to request that many. We can stick to NFPA when needed to avoid being cut down, but if there's a good reason for not asking for that many then that's your choice and no one should take issue with it. Like you said, matching is going to limit a lot of options for you.

Will we get by the computer asking for 12 SCBA even though we have only 11 riding positions on 4 trucks. We currently operate with 17 SCBA, all of witch are 2002 and older. Our department consists of 26 members, 14 who are firefighter 1.
