    Default Junior Firefighter with radio

I recently bought a uhf radio and I'm trying to find the best way to tell my chief I want to program the radio to our channels. I'm 17, I have first responder certification and CRP. My chief told me awhile back that he wouldn't mind me getting a pager. If I hear a call, I can go on it. I go on ALL the calls when I'm at the station. It's a volunteer fire deptment. We don't have any spare radios around. Do y'all think it's a good idea to ask?

Although you're probably dying to get a handheld radio instead of just a pager right now, give it time. As a junior firefighter, you have a number of things to learn, practice, and get comfortable with (including getting some basic fire service certifications) before you need a radio.

I would suspect that if the Chief said you could get a PAGER, he likely meant that you could get a PAGER.

In most departments, radios are issued to the members that they believe need a radio. In my combination department, that does include our junior members, but that is because our command staff believes that juniors have a purpose for having a portable.

That being said the reason that you don't have a portable is likely in part because YOUR command staff may not believe that juniors need radios.

I wouldn't ask him, but hey, that could be just me.

Assuming you have the department's permission to use a radio on the system, probably your best bet is to work with the department's vendor - they have all of the appropriate information (frequencies, sub-tones, DPL, etc) and can set the radio properly. Without knowing exactly where you are, there's no way for us to tell whether you even have the appropriate radio.

Important caveat: Just because they let you have a radio doesn't mean you have to use it. Too many people think that because they have a radio, they just have to talk on it.

Our comms guy goes irate when someone buys a radio and asks him to program it if he does not have the software to do the job. We have all of our programming done in house by the Asst. Chief.

I might have asked the Chief first before buying a radio that might not work on the system or be allowed after he told me he would not mind me getting a PAGER. Hope it works out.

Frankly, if you bought a radio without approval of the chief, then get it programmed without his knowledge or permission, then used it, my bet is your time with that VFD would shortly be over.

Why is it so many juniors suffer from impatience and feel that rules or decisions by the chief are nothing more than something to try to get around?

We have had several guys over the years who decided, since we hadn't issued them a radio, that they must need to buy one themselves.

If you need a radio, the department will issue you one. If they can't afford it, they will say so. At that point is when you would consider buying your own.

Although the OP hasn't said so, that's a real possibility.

The OP is a JUNIOR that has as much need for a radio as he does for a helicopter at this point.

AGAIN, I have to ask why is it Juniors seem to come on here all the time trying to find ways to circumvent the rules of the fire department they supposedly belong to? I am serious, if I were the chief of this department and this kid bought a radio, had it programmed to our frequencies without permission, and then used it, his butt would be gone like right now and I would have the radio impounded for illegal use of our frequencies. You can call me a dick if you care to but rules are rules are rules and this is nothing more than electronic freelancing.

Further if it were okay he wouldn't be here asking "the best way to tell my chief I want to program the radio to our channels." That right there says he knows he shouldn't even be thinking about it, let alone doing it.

speaks volumes not only about you -but also about your department. But on the chance your chief isn't a whacker like you, why don't you invite him to join firehouse? And just for fun -go ahead and post your FD contact info.

Thanks for the support. He won't post his FD info or invite his chief to join, even he knows what he just posted was idiotic. Because you and I BOTH quoted him even if he deletes his post it will still be here. You have to laugh at that kind of stupidity.

Once your nuts drop you ought not talk that way to grown men. Somebody will end up giving you an education that you'll not forget.

PS. Don't say **** on your new radio.

Well, your chief can do whatever he wants to do, but there is no valid reason for a junior to have a radio.
