    Default 2013 FP&S Grants

I am thinking of applying for a 1st Time Fire Prevention and Safety Grant. Below is the a list of needs that I am thinking of that is important and would not have many or any financial needs to implement. Please give any thoughts on previous years and current year funding thoughts and suggestions. Thank you.

1 - area of need is to expand our Fire Inspection program e.g. Fire Marshal , Reporting equipment, Fire Marshal classes, update Codes

    2 - Fire Prevention Prop / Equipment

    3 - Life Safety campaign e.g. AED's , Smoke Alarms

#1 and #3 score higher, props are better done as a group because there's a lot of question in minds about the reality of how much a single applicant shares what they get. As a group with named partners it's more likely to be considered even though there aren't true "regional" FP apps, just have to list everyone off like a regular AFG regional. Carries the same weight in review, and all FP apps get reviewed.

#1 and #3 have to show why things aren't happening now, quantify everything from buildings affected by inspections/codes to the number of people needing detectors and why. AEDs aren't eligible in FP but they can be an included topic on safety if you're giving talks. The more topics the merrier when it comes to life safety.

Looking like #1 is where the Chief wants to head. Perhaps trying to obtain a FM full time or part time position because of the backlog and need for implementation? Trying to gather everything we need to restart the program e.g. staff, training, IT equipment. Our department is a busy 1100 plus all volunteer/ pay per call department small rural poor town department with a FY 2013 LODD of our Fire Marshal. Hopefully the FP&S program might help getting back on track with Life Safety Prevention work.

Any other thoughts please share. Looking at the program information has not been that helpful. Any success stories please share, thank you.

Asking for payroll costs require a lot of argument/evidence that you'll be able to continue it. As well as address the previous position, LODD, how that's related to the request (i.e. was it code-related or other causative factor that the app will address), and all that good stuff since it's an ongoing expense for a one-time funding from FP&S. Like any project with ongoing costs it's not just about the need, it's about how the local funding will keep it going after the kickstart from an FP&S grant.

How about trying to restart a reprogram since his loss. We were in the middle of reorganization after settling into a new facility. A fair amount of information was lost and he was about to kick off switching to NIFIRS. I do not want to use his loss for our problems but it did have a impact.

Thank You for your feedback, its been a long few months.

That's what I meant by was the loss related to something that you can use the FP&S grant to prevent next time around. If it was something like a cardiac arrest or undetected medical condition, then that's more supportive of a health and wellness program in AFG versus FP&S. If it was something where a lack of inspections could have found the building's condition so bad that it shouldn't have been an interior attack and a collapse was the cause, that's an FP&S point that needs to be brought up.

The main question I still have about ongoing costs is if he was paid why there hasn't been someone rehired. If he was retired/semi-retired and doing it but it needs to be a PT/FT thing, then that's possible under FP&S (better under SAFER) but as I mentioned above the ongoing costs for the pay will be an issue.

If it's not going to be a paid position but no one else is qualified/trained for the position and you need funding for that, then it is up FP&S alley for the training and other things needed.
