Default DC Firefighters doing neighborhood watch?

I can't believe the headlines. Who in their right mind would think that's a good idea? What next, have framers fix plumbing problems? This is why I pay union dues, this needs to be stopped and fast. Dumbest idea I have heard of in a long time. Good luck out there my DC brothers, hope this madness ends soon!

DC is a different world. It's also interesting when driving there for the first time to have a MPD cop pull behind you with his lights on. Pulled over, and he just kept cruising on. Turns out that they leave them on all the time for "crime prevention".

At night, the brothers should be getting a quick nap between calls, not watching the streets.

They tried that crap here years back. A rapist was ruining around early morning hours ,they had us out on corners, told us a black guy with a Raiders jacket.that was like every other guy at the time.....

I asked the BC ok chief when I see him, can I hit him in the head with the hydrant wrench or just the body? Union stopped it pretty fast.

Did they have other departments out their looking for the rapist or just the PD and FD? I bet the leaders would never go for having the park rangers doing such a thing, that would take them away from doing the job they're paid to do, manage parks.
The only thing I see that's funny about this is the statement "they should be resting between calls when they're in the FH" are you kidding me? One of the busiest stations in DC, resting? Only if they're lucky. I'm sure they have plenty to do between alarms restoring their apparatus and cleaning the smoke and chemical they are exposed to off their bodies.
I expect that kind of thought process from the general public and media. Heck, they think we're sitting around playing checkers and washing our POVs on their dime. When our leaders see it that way, that's downright scary!
Glad I moved away from that area when I was a kid. I can only hope see something in the headlines stating this is over and the decision makers have been fired for incompetence, because they obviously are.
I called my electrician to see if he would come over to fix my clogged toilet. He said he wasn't trained for that and I should call a plumber.
Where is the union with this? They have to be fighting this.
Is it true this has happened in DC before?

    Good luck and stay safe!

Headline at Statter 20 hours ago:"DC firefighter crime watch update: Deputy Mayor Quander defends putting fire trucks on patrol in high crime area."

Why hasn't this been squashed by the unions yet? Hope they give the guys dry blankets tonight, it's going to be cold. From what I hear about the DC apparatus maintenance I doubt the heat works on the rigs. GOOD LUCK!

    Quander said a "government presence"

Why not send a snow plow or parks and rec. vehicle to sit there?

Exactly what I was thinking. Looks like Quander likes hazing the DCFD.

How many guns and how much ammo would I get to bring????

That's what I'd be asking. Bet that would put an end to it pretty quick...

How could they NOT be against the idea?

Police union would not want to give up responsibilities to other departments.

Fire union would not want added danger, responsibility and legal liability for it's members.

Don't know all/any of the facts involved so I'm just guessing.

I agree with all of your points. The question is tho, who runs the city and makes operational decisions...the mayor, or the union?

One entity is in charge and one is not. The union may be voicing it's opposition to this day and night, but, they are not in charge of the department.

I wonder what will happen when some gangbangers decide to rob the Jakes or use the fire truck as cover during a drive by shooting incident...

I guess something as drastic as actually punishing criminals and fixing the inadequacies of the criminal justice system so that crime is actually deterred is asking too much?

Cheze-wiz Quander, if you run your horses to hard, they are going to get sick and injured.

"Ed Smith, the president of the union that represents firefighters, said on Friday that fewer than 90 firefighters, out of 440 scheduled to work that day, were absent. He said half had to go to the Police and Fire Clinic and be seen by a doctor. Others did not have to go the clinic; a provision in their contract allows them to call out sick once every four months without getting a note from a doctor. Smith said many were on long-term sick leave."

    Hang in there DC Fire!

Hopefully a Jake impales the would-be robber with the pike!
