Default A looming question for the Veterans.

    Hello,

I have a relatively difficult question about becoming a firefighter.

    Criminal history.

When I was 19 I got into a fight with someone in a movie theatre. This person came up to me and grabbed me and tried to remove me from the movie theatre for laughing. I yelled at him to stop and he didn't so I hit him and broke his nose. He then pressed charges on me and I plead guilty in court as a young naive kid following the advice of my appointed lawyer.

I am now 26 and a former Marine with 2 tours to Afghanistan and have been involved in many volunteer programs. My most prized volunteer achievement is a letter of appreciation from the Mayor of Pohang Korea for teaching children English.

I currently have successfully passed my EMT course and have done volunteer work at the emergency room here in my city.

My goal like many others here is to become a Firefighter.

How does this effect my standing considering my two points above?

In short does having a criminal history negate my military experience on the score card or does it equal out? Or does it void it and put me in the "black folder".

    Thank you,

    K13

Are you trying to apply in the same state the incident happened in??

In away time and your service does help

Do you know what level the final plea was??? Misdemeanor, class a b or c , felony or called something else

That does matter , you can check city web sites some have the disqualifiers on them and some font care after so many years

Good luck , you may not get on your dream dept but should be able to get one

What state are you trying in??

It is for Seattle. Yes the issue happened in WA but not in Seattle. They say it will not DQ me but it hints at it hindering me due to the competition. Gross Misdemeanor 4th degree assault not DV obviously. I plead guilty because I was confident in my Lawyer's advice. I have an interview with them in the next 2 weeks and I am sacrificing my current job to make the interview.

I know it is a big risk but for some reason I feel I still have a very good chance.

Like I said you have years and a good history since

    Just push that also

Yes if someone is clean they may get a step on you, but would say military would trump non military!!!
