    Default Application Question

Why would a department not hand out applications prior to an opening date when they are only taking the first 50 applications?

For example, If I stood in line days before the schedule opening date to get an application and didn't fill out before 50 others I would be SOL? Doesn't seem as if they would be getting the best candidates this way.

This process also hurts the department if you think about it. If you only accept the first 50 what happens when 10 of those firefighters cant make it through an academy? Or they fail a portion of the hiring process? Or in 6 months when firefighters retire and you need to fill the voids? Why wouldnt you take as many applications as possible within a time limit, hire, and establish an eligibility list for the future?

With todays budgets the days when I took tests there was 8,000 applying and they hired 60.....today they need to limit the candidate pool to save money.

Decided on taking my boy to opening day on Thursday, so I went up Friday am. Came back home after waiting a couple of hours and driving around the town, since no line was forming yet. Drove back up Sunday morning, still no one in line stayed in town and spent the night in my truck. Woke up at 4 am Monday morning drove to the station and still no one in line. There were about 30 of us at 8 am when they started handing out packets. Test is on 4/26 with interviews and conditional offer is the first half of May with a start date of 6/1 for 2 of the 50 testing.
