    Default Houston Fire 2014

I know Im way early. Im just trying to get some information, since Im from out of state. Such as schedule (debit day?), daily station life, how the paramedic rotation works and the intensity of the academy. Hopefully there are some current HFD members floating around on here. Thanks in advance for any responses! Good luck to all.

Thanks. I looked all over before I posted this. Did not find what I was looking for. So I'll keep trying.

Will HFD be using the FST exam like last year? How many recruits are they looking to hire? Thanks.

Do I need to buy a study guide for the Civil Service Exam?
No. Each applicant that applies online will receive an email that will include a link to access the preparation guide. If you are interested in another resource to help you prepare for the test, there is a practice test available from the vendor at a cost of $12.00.

just took the civil service exam, anyone have any ideas if scores come out before/after the PAT and interview, or a number of recruits they want.

Being at the entry level test it seemed there was only about 400-550 people there and they said they were expecting 1800

scores will come out before the pat and interview. the interview is more like a meeting w a recruiter to make sure you have all your documents in line for the background investigation. from what I was told from the last go around they are gonna hire a lot of people due to a federal grant. last process they had three classes for uncertified and two for certified. my guess this year they'll have at least two academy's maybe three again. so if you pass that test and can run 1.5 miles you're pretty much good to go.

I did everything back in August since I'm from out of state. Rank in the mid 200's. Got an email from my recruiter in early December to buy this EMT book and start prepping for the class, but no official word yet.

I passed poly in September and also received the email regarding the textbook. No word since. Anybody else heard from their recruiter yet regarding March academy?

I think most people got that email in December. My recruiter called me last month and said they just filled the first academy at the mid 150s so it's projected if your under about the 450 rank you should be getting an offer to go to academy.

The recruiter said to just stay in good shape and that they were flying through the numbers. If your in the May/June academy you have to repeat your mile and a half for time the beginning of May

I did see that, but I think they've only posted for certified this year.

Where did you get certified DL1642?

Fire cert from Fire Training Specialist back in 2012 & finished the Paramedic program through San Jac in 2012 as well. I work full time as firefighter now & part time at a few depts. around the Houston area. Taking a pretty good pay cut going to HFD initially but i think it'll be worth it in the end

Tell me about it. It seems the closer I get to making this a reality; the more opportunities fall into my lap that pay several times more.

It's a good way to make sure you really want this job.

Yea thats how i see it. Its always been the place i wanted to be ever since i got into doing this-feel like if i dont do it now i probably never will. Been trying to work alot now, pay stuff off, & put alittle back to get ready for the initial pay cut. It'll be a lifestyle change at first, but according to their pay scale ill be good in about a year or so.. Im really looking forward to going

Yup, going into the march class. The only thing scaring me is the pay. Houston got a lot more expensive since I last lived there 1 1/2 years ago.
