it will have little to No help in getting an RN degree.

The EMT basic course is 150 -180 hours and usually done in a 2 nights per week 4 hours class format.
usually completed in 3-4 months at the local community college or other places. Cost varies depending on the area of the country. $500-$1000 plus books & testing fees for state & national registry exams.

My wife is an RN. & EMT-I
Day off job:: she can work a RN cover shift @ time & 1/2 plus bonus $100 per shift.

Back up plan for an RN would be to go driving a renal roundup truck @ $10 $ / hr????

Very little of the same coursework: Yes they both learn to take vitals and use a stethoscope, but outside of that not much.
