I will complete my Bachelors in Fire Science Management here in the next 2 months and will then be moving on to my Masters. However, I am at a crossroads and looking at 2 different programs. 1) Eastern Kentucky University's Master's in Emergency Management with a concentration in Fire Safety and 2.)Penn State University's Master's in Public Administration. My question is as I progress up the proverbial ladder of the fire service which of the 2 concentrations would serve me better.

I earned my Masters in Public Administration. As a Division Chief, I use the skills every day that I learned in my course work. My courses included Human Resource Management, Negotiating Dynamics, Budget, etc. I learned a great deal about the political process and how to get things accomplished.
If you are interested in advancing (I am certain you are), you will be very glad you went this route. This is the same type of degree as the City Manager and other Department Heads.

I finished my Bachelor's of Professional Studies in Fire Admin/Prevention at The University of Memphis, the same program through the NFA. I am also considering a Master's through Arkansas State University and their Public Admin route. Although Oklahoma State offers an Emergency Management in Fire Admin I think?? ASU is completely online as well.
