Default Something I heard that concerned me - Georgia

    Hello All,

so recently I've been becoming very involved in my local fire department, I'm working on becoming a volunteer firefighter and all of that but I heard something today that I'd like to clarify with others. I've made a friend and I'll save the trouble with names for the sake of him, but I told him I'd look into this. Anyways, he's 18 years old and he's a junior in high school, I've come across him because we're both about to do the same training but today he was told that because he didn't have a high school diploma or a G.E.D, he couldn't take the firefighter 1 final exam but could still attend the class, just couldn't actually be certified. He was also told that this was a state law and that the city could only take him as an explorer until he graduated high school. I tried looking it up on Google, but I wasn't able to find anything.

I'm just trying to help a friend, so please get back to me on anything that any of you may know about the state of Georgia and this law. It's strange to me because it just sounds a little funny. He's a good guy and he definitely deserves this, those of you who might have similar state laws, I'd appreciate you telling me about them here as well.

    Thanks guys!

    Certification Package
The certification package requires a joint effort between the agency/department and individual to complete. The fire department is responsible for maintaining the completed certification package on each firefighter. All applicable supporting documentation is to be kept on file at the department and made available for review by GFSTC staff upon request.
The following are areas within the certification package:
 Check-off Sheet for Completing the package
 Application information (completed by applicant)
 Personal History Release (signed by applicant)
 Age Verification (requires birth certification and one other)
 *Criminal History Fingerprint Search Results
o Criminal history search must be completed within the previous 18 months.
 Verification of Good Moral Character (see Good Moral Charter information below)
 High School Diploma or State Issue GED (copy required)

I got ya, I guess that includes all volunteers that need to be state certified. Thanks, I'll give him the number and let them talk to them himself but it seems pretty cut and dry, you need one if you want to do anything with the fire department.
