    Default Florida Hiring

I've applied to countless fire departments like I'm sure most do. I've completed the process with several departments and gotten to the eligibility list with 6 of them. My question is...what can I do to finally go from being on the list to being one of the guys that actually gets hired. I know I have 2 arrests on my record. Both cases were dropped and dismissed and neither were for violence regardless I feel like it could be either my arrests or the fact that I don't have any extra certifications on top of my Firefighter, EMT and EVOC cert. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated thanks.

I was arrested for marijuana under 20 grams and for having a fake ID to get into a bar. I'm 27 now and the fake ID happened at 19 and the marijuana at 21. I currently work at the UPS store but I'm thinking on starting my paramedic schooling or attempting to get an EMT job.

    Hum

    Depts are letting you test

    Some have auto disqualifiers

Some have with in so many years

Check the city web sites for the disqualifiers

My guess is the mj is killing you, you cannot get around the fact you were arrested

Get your story together and say yes I did it, and this is how I have improved my life and choices

As some will say you are going up against Boy Scouts

I've only applied to one but I faced the same problem. I got all the way to the end of hiring process for the volunteer position and I never heard back. Absolutely though this is another route I'm willing to take. I've looked around I only know of one more department somewhat near my area that I can apply to volunteer in.

As for my arrests I'm very honest and clear about it and I always make sure to state how I've improved from my mistakes. I just thought that if I achieved a position on the ranked eligibility list that I past the point where my background could be detrimental. I could be wrong but why wouldn't this have been a problem before I was even able to interview?

    We have disqualifiers some automatic

Some say if you have not done it with in so many years

So yo can test, interview everything, but we still can pick and choose

Where as some depts will just plain rank on test and interview, Than start at the top and have to hire from the top down

Ok, so if ultimately they still choose then I would think what we just spoke about for example: extra certifications, volunteer and EMT experience could potentially help me go from just another number on the list to possibly getting hired. As far as certifications, aside from Paramedic which do you recommend I should try an get first?

I think you are good to go as far as certs

Check the different city web sites to see what the minimum certs needed just to appy

I think paramedic helps, even if not required, and you are in a place to get it

Stay out of any more trouble, including parking tickets

"""""Keep yourself hirable for life"""", you never know, been there

If you get paramedic and want to move to Texas , more openings , less competition with paramedic

I've had multiple friends in Florida that will get a job with a city or county in a different department, i.e. Fleet maintenance or something like that, and then transfer over to the fd when a spot opens. A lot of the times people who already work with the city are hired first. Just food for thought.
