Default Which Should I Do Next?

Firefighter 2 or NWCG Wildland Firefighter 1/2

I live in Western Washington and ultimately I'd like to get on with a career municipal department (perhaps one that also does some wildland firefighting).

Currently, I have EMT, IFSAC FF1, and HAZMAT OPS. Perhaps in the future I'll be interested in Paramedic but at this current point in time, I'd like to just stick with basic.

Oh yea Cap, I totally have, just tested yesterday. I'm just trying to determine the next step for me with the better payoff/outcome.

In Western Washington it sounds like you have the basics. But I guess from there it really depends on what is most important to you. If you want a bigger city over here, than they will usually put you through their academy again no matter what certifications you already have. In which case, getting your wildland certs may be the better option. If you are looking for more of the smaller departments farther away from the Seattle area, many times they don't put you through an academy and going after your FFII would be the better option. My department sends you through FFI and FFII whether you have them already or not.

I agree with the above poster who recommended education. I did not see anything in your post about working toward an AA degree. THIS IS IMPORTANT. All of my peers and I have degrees. It's important to be in school.

I would also advocate working toward a basic fire academy at the junior college.

I also applaud you for not going to paramedic school. Don't get me wrong, I think it would absolutely accelerate your chances of getting hired, but I do not recommend it unless you are passionate to become a PM. If you are just checking the boxes you will not make it or you will not be a GOOD paramedic.

Conversely, if you are passionate to become a paramedic - GO FOR IT!

Riding around on a box with a good partner as a FF/PM was one of the highlights of my career.
