I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOUR ASKING. DO YOU MEAN RURAL OR URBAN , PAID-ON-CALL OR CAREER? IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE COMMUNITY AND WHAT YOUR CHIEF CAN GET IN HIS OR HER BUDGET OR WHAT THE UNION CAN BARGAIN FOR YOU. WE GET PAID DIFFERENT THAN OUR NEIGHBORING DEPARTMENTS BUT GET A 1% COST OF LIVING RAISE EVERY JANUARY 1st. MY DEPARTMENT IS A PAID-ON-CALL DEPARTMENT.

In the northeast, my dept. is probably one of the lowest paid, but it depends on the size of your city, the staffing, and the cost of living. I wouldn't want to make my salary living in Conn. but in Maine it's OK. Usually, bigger depts pay more base, but smaller depts have more overtime opportunities.

Well here in Detroit we are paid less than the suburbs around us. On average about 10% less.I hope one day we'll catch up to the burbs.
