I visited a few stations there last summer and one of the guys at 82 Engine said the department was issuing "plastic" helmets (Cairns 1010's, I think) because leathers were too costly. Take care and be safe.

After years of tradition, FDNY began issuing Ben Franklin II's and Cairns 1010's shortly into fiscal year 99. After much debate, Ben Franklin II's were selected as the helmet to issue by the official FDNY quartermaster. HOWEVER if you want to purchase an N5A with your own funds, you may do so.
