    Default Smokey the Mascot

Did anyone else read about the rat bastards that beat and almost killed the mascot of Nine Mile Point Fire? Smokey is the 5 year old dalmation mascot of Nine Mile Point Fire Department in New Orleans. One of the firefighters found smokey beaten and very near death...and a trail of bricks that were used to bludgeon the animal. I cannot believe that anyone would injure an animal like this. I am outraged. I sincerely hope they find the cowards that did this and punish them to the fullest extent of the law. This poor animal will now be without one of his rear legs, and will take months to recover from the injuries he sustained because someone thought it was funny or cool to beat on a dog!!! I hope they catch the person or persons responsible and string them up! Get better soon Smokey...we are all thinking of you....and good luck to the firefighters in catching the criminals responsible for this.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Smokey!
My thoughts are with you and your dept.

If they catch the people who did this, maybe they should launch a few bricks at them and see how they like it!

Hey folks - i agree 110% that when they find out who did this - they should chase them around and toss a few bricks at them - see how funny they think it is then.

Anyway - I read in the article that
The League in Support of Animals (LISA), a local organization, is offering a $500 reward for suspect information. LISA is also planning a fundraiser to assist with the veterinarian bills.
I haven't located an address for Nine Mile Point Fire Department yet but I did find the LISA web site.

    the link is www.lisaendcruelty.org

I'm sure if you contact those folks they could help you out.

Best wishes to Smokey for a speedy recovery and to all the firefighters at Nine Mile Point - We hope you are able to find and punish those responsible for this.

For all who wanted the address to the Nine Mile Point Fire Department here it is:
    Nine Mile Point Fire Department
    1024 Oak Avenue
    Nine Mile Point, La 70094
    504-349-5279
    or
    504-349-5178

also the phone number for L.I.S.A. is
    504-366-8972

This attack hits home for me as an animal lover, firefighter and also because Nine Mile Point Fire Department is about 15 miles from here. I agree with N2Dfire about the brick throwing thing, but it seems to easy on them. If i hear or see any updates in the paper or news ill be sure to post them. If you all need anymore info feel free to ask and ill try to help.

Thanks H-1 Mech. I was wondering if anyone else was sending their thoughts to the FD? I know I'll have a letter out to them on Friday.

I just phoned 9 Mile Pt VFC to find out their address (before I saw this post, of course.....) I plan on sending a check to assist with the vet bills. They have not yet received one, but anticipate a large one.

As the owner of 2 dalmatians, i was especially outraged at this horrific crime. I'd like to yank out the perpetrator's teeth with a pair of pliers!

Here's the latest update from the local paper, no leads yet:

Officials with a local humane organization hope a $2,000 reward will help police track down the person who attacked the Nine Mile Point Volunteer Fire Company's pet Dalmatian.

Smokey, the fire station's 5-year-old mascot, was beaten by an intruder at the station yard last week. A veterinarian had to amputate one of Smokey's back legs, and the dog's front left leg was broken in two places.

A $1,000 donation from the G. Michael Lala Foundation for Animals and an anonymous gift of $500 have been added to the original $500 offered by the League in Support of Animals, LISA executive director Jeff Dorson said. The organization can be reached at 366-8972.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Col. John Fortunato said there was no new information in the case. LISA's reward is for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

Smokey went home to the firefighters Wednesday with his broken leg in a cast.

"He looks so sad," fire company administrative assistant Barbara Gautreau said. "I'm sad, too. He was walking around even though he's got three legs, and one of them is broken."

"He's confused. He's still trying to use that rear leg," fire company Lt. Paul Jackson said.

Jackson said firefighters believe someone went into the station's unlocked yard on Oak Avenue on Oct. 22 or Oct. 23 and threw the dog against a neighbor's wooden fence. His leg also caught on a low, chain-link fence around the station yard. Smokey was found two days later lying in the neighbor's yard, unable to move. Fire officials said the neighbor is not a suspect.

Smokey is resting comfortably at one of the company's stations during the day and going home with a firefighter at night so that he can be nursed back to health, Jackson said.

"He's had a tough life," he said. A Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy found Smokey starving in the street three years ago and took him to the fire station, where he stayed after no one came to claim him.

Although one of the firefighters originally planned to adopt Smokey after the attack, Jackson said plans are now up in the air.

"We're debating right now. We used to go out with him and play with him and run him," and would miss not having the friendly canine around, Jackson said. "We want to keep him, but we're so scared. We can't be there all the time, and this happened when we went off to training. . . . We're afraid he won't make it the next time. "

I couldn't believe what I read!!!! I say we find the scum and drag them behind a brush truck through a brair patch, and then a fire ant mound or two.

I'm sending a note to the agency to show some support. It makes me wonder if they recently had someone terminated or someone who couldn't pass their test . sounds like someone really out for revenge against those guys.

Anyway, my three dogs (Cinder, Rhory, and Iggy) and myself are keeping Smokey in our thoughts and prayers

I can't believe anyone would do something like this. I was so upset when I read the article about Smokey. Let's all pray he recovers and has a safe, happy life and the sickoes that did this are brought to justice.

Poor Smokey! And those poor firefighters! I think the attack on Smokey was absolutely horrible and the people that did these things to him should be horsewhipped. I also feel sorry for Smokey's firefighters because they probably felt safe before and now they feel like their fire station is no longer a safe refuge. It takes a sick and demented person to torture a living creature like that and if I was on that fire department I'd be creeped out to the max! I am owned by a whole zoo: 3 huskies, 2 ferrets, 3 cats, 3 birds and fish...I love animals and I love the sense of peace and safety I enjoy here at my cabin. What a horrible thing to happen.
I think it's a great idea to send money to the firefighters so they can pay Smokey's vet bill. I'm going to see what I can give! God bless you all for being so kind!

I remember hearing somewhere that police dogs are considered actual police officers in some areas. What I mean is that when they are wounded in the line of duty their attackers are charged with assault on a police officer. Too bad that Smokey isn't considered a FF. Then it would be assault on a FF. I hope they catch the moron and put him away. Smokey, get better and we're glad you are still with us.
