Guys - PLEASE listen to me. I'm sure I sound quite biased against the country, but hear me out.
I was stationed in Rihyad for 122 days this last spring. You do not want to be there. The compound is very small, You CANNOT drink, and your security is certainly jeopardized. In the four months I was there, there were a total of 5 americans killed by car bombs, and various other means of attacks in the city. Not to mention an American doctor who had his hands blown off when he opened a letter bomb. The Saudi's DO NOT like us being there. And in the wake of all that is going on over there now, you'd be a fool to try to enter the country. Remember, there are Bin Laden followers all over Saudi, and there main duty is to kill Americans. No questions asked. Bin Laden has even offered 1 million dollars for proof that they killed an American.
Basically what I'm saying is, in the time I was there, I felt very unsafe. I was quite afraid to go downtown at all. At least in Rihyad. Remember, this is the country where they still cut off peoples heads in public for breaking the law.

It sounds more and more like Saudi is NOT the place to work as a contract-firefighter!
When I started this topic, it was just to give some advice to anybody thinking of applying fopr the Saudi jobs...

I can share with you folks that there are ALOT of places overseas that hire contract-
firefighters. I worked in Micronesia as a FF/EMT for 5 years, and before I signed the contract it would have been nice to have known more info.

I know of contract-firefighter jobs in Micronesia, Antartica, Kosovo, Hungary, Antiqua and Saudi. Several guys I worked with in Micronesia went to Kosovo and Hungary. They are geting almost $7,000 per month!, but they are in danger of getting killed or seriously injured constantly.

Antartica is a six month contract, pays about $23,000 for that period I think.

Micronesia pays about $35,000 with the O/T and it is a year contract.

Kosovo and Hungary are both NATO/UN bases where the US Air Force stopped the Structure/Crash/Fire protection, and it then went to private contract.

    Antiqua you are a FF/Security Guard/Baggage Handler!

Beware of companies that offer overseas employment. They charge you for contacting and applying for the job. I saw the ad for my Micronesia FF job in Firehouse magazine!
It did not cost me anything to apply! Another guy that they hired paid $450 to a New York firm to find out/apply for the same job!

The above is my opinion only, it doesn't reflect that of any dept./agency I work for, am a member of, or deal with. Also, I do not intend to bash anyone, I'm just stating what I do, and have seen. If anyone is offended I apologize.

Sounds like Saudi Arabia is a lot like our department - except our executions are held in private, not in public.

No Drinking...No Pornography....No This and No That ?? to live in an over sized kitty litter box putting out car bomb blasts and taking more of a risk than we do in our own country ? HA ! Not me....Recrutiers are going to play the whole thing up to look like an outstanding adventure and promise you the world....Recrutiers are all the same....I work in the Trucking Industry and we have 'em...Man do they lie to potential driver canidates...So I'm sure the same applies all over....It's thier job to lie. As far as going over to packa-bool or afghain - land - o - sand or what ever they call themselves as a firefighter is down right nuts. As bad as I would love a career in the Fire Service I wouldn't accept a job over there if they paid 100,000.00 a year....Look at what those Sand-Dwellers did to our country and now they want our help ? Yeah Right.....Anybody wonder why their own people don't come out for these jobs ? I'll tell you why...They know better, They know the conditions over there, and they know they may not reach retirement.....What happens when somebody goes..."oopps" and the fire house/compound gets bombed ? ~ After what the representation from that country did on US Soil I say Screw Them and thier Fire Department Staffing Problems....We got enough problems here to take care of and we should worry about our own FIRST

For everyone interested (including myself), here is the website for Vinnell Corporation updating the Saudi FF jobs! It seems that they had hundreds of applications, and are currently processing a few dozen for the openings they have now.

    Cool

Vinnell Corporation joined with Brown & Root Services to create VBR, to provide base
maintenance services to DOD bases within the republic of Turkey. The contact is: Brown
& Root Services, 1550 Wilson Blvd, Suite 400, Arlington, VA 22209. Fax (703)526-7774.

Vinnell Corporation contact for the Saudi Firefighter jobs is: Vinnell Corporation, 12150
East Monument Dr., Suite 800 (Attn: ES-F&R), Fairfax, VA 22033. Fax (703) 385-1262.
    Voice inquiies 1-800-444-7264 ext 213/214.

I know a Crew/Station Chief there. We worked together as contract firefighters in Micronesia. He says it is "great"! I understand Vinnell has already filled the positions, but if you are interested, I would submit an application anyway. Chances are some people hired will not go thru with the complete hiring process (background check, medical exam, change of mind, etc), and they may hire more. Another opportunity may arise if after a few weeks or months some of the neewly hired guys decide they dont like Saudi...

I was offered a job for them. Asst Chief and they will match my wages.......Yea....right. I heard more crap from them in the fifteen-minute call that they made to me. Will I leave firefighting in the states, leave all my family and friends, my home then in about 2 to 3 years come back and start all over again? And when I get back, what will I be like, mentally and physically. No drinking, and may as will say no sex. Better up the wages to about a million dollars a year and then I will consider it................ but then again…….NOT!!!!
