I think its just FDNY's (and other depts possibly) nickname for walkie talkie.

It's a hand held radio. The term is most common here in the NY/NJ area.

It came from Motorola, its what they call their hand helds. Look on the back of your HT 1000...

Handy-talky...
Put your hands to you mouth and yell...really economical solution to radio communication needs...that is assuming you have hands and all...
(Although there may be other definitions, that is the lingo I have heard used...no jokes intended)

ALWAYS A WISE *** IN THE GROUP (JIZHEAD OR WHATEVER). THANKS FOR YOUR REPLIES. WAS JUST WONDERING IF THAT WAS SOMETHING ONLY FDNY USED OR WHAT. NEVER HEARD THAT TERM BEFORE.
