Post Answer to "Where's the Good Training?"

A Texas firefighter wrote asking for a quick suggestion on where the good extrication seminars are beig held. There are a lot of programs out there...there is a smaller number that are good. There is an even smaller number that I personally would recommend.

    The question-
    Mr. Moore
I am currently assigned to a truck co. with our dept where we are responsible for rescue/extrication work. These have always been interesting to me, since I am also an auto repair tech on my off days, but I find it puzzling why it is so hard to find really advanced nut and bolt kind of training for the late model high tech stuff...Are you aware of any training opportunities in and around Texas that fit this bill. Any input/guidance on this will greatly be appreciated. I'd like to find something that I could get and bring back here and give to the rest of the guys so we can try to keep up with all the rapidly changing technology in the automobiles we face today.

PS. I really enjoy the "you make the call" segment in FH!!

Here's my reply with just one seminar suggestion. What other ones do you know of that you'd personally recommend?

    My reply-

There is nothing in Texas that really addresses advanced extrication, new technology stuff. For a seminar of this calibre, you'll have to travel outside of the state.

One I can think of right off hand is the first weekend of May in Dayton Ohio. It is a seminar conducted by Howell Rescue Co. 800-228-7612.

They take about 100 rescuers and have about nine of us as instructors. Over two full days, you divide up into groups and rotate among each of these stations. Air chisels, stabilization, new vehicloe technology, car vs. truck scenarios, a come-along station, etc. Some real good talent brought in from
all across the US for teaching.

Bring your camera and I know you'd wind up with enough new ideas and new information to really benefit your fire department.

We've got the exact same problems over here in Oz!

Unless you're willing to travel to USA (For Ron Moore, Ron Shaw or Steve Kidd or similar...) or travel to Europe (For ICET) or similar- we've got nothing.

The other unfortunate thing is there is a lot of rivalry (For want of a better word!) between services, so there is very little cross training or sharing of information.

I've been on the recieving end of criticism for the uniform I wear, not the information I can share. It's not a great feeling.

If anyone is interested in training, drop me a line! I may not have the Ron Moore knowledge, but I'm willing to share what I have- Don't judge a book by its cover....

Hey Ron, would you or Firehouse like to sponsor me so I can come to the Expo?! (And perhaps attend some of your training sessions!!)
