A bit of news worth passing on for anyone who is using the GriGri for belays.

Recently the British Mountaineering Council's Equipment Investigation Panel and Petzl (the manufacturer) have been investigating two incidents where it appeared that the GriGri failed to arrest a fall. Initial results suggest no technical fault, but indicate instances where a failure may occur. They note - and we should all know this - the device is excellent but not fail-safe nor "hands-off". A more detailed report is being developed. (source - British Mountaineering Council (www.thebmc.co.uk/news))

It can't be said enough - all of the NFPA/ASTM/UIAA/etc. certifications in the world will not protect from operator error. Familiarity with equipment and techniques is critical.
